We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Abby Stich a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Abby, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
At Recess, our purpose is multifaceted and deeply rooted in our collective experiences, aspirations, and values. Bailey and I had the unique opportunity to work closely with countless, renowned experts in the the wellness space. Drawing from their invaluable insights and expertise, we have cultivated a profound understanding of the transformative power of holistic wellness practices. However, we also understand the difficult reality of lacking the time, money, and community for most people to incorporate these life-changing practices into their own lives.
Our humble beginnings as event coordinators in a sea of wellness experts has instilled within us a profound appreciation for the everyday woman’s journey. We recognize the challenges and barriers that many women face in prioritizing their well-being amidst the demands of modern life. It is this firsthand experience that drives our commitment to bridging the gap in holistic wellness for the everyday woman in a realistic and accessible way.
Our desire to make holistic wellness attainable for all stems from the profound impact it has had on our own lives. Through embracing mindfulness, self-care practices, and holistic approaches to health, we have experienced firsthand the positive transformations that are possible when prioritizing well-being. It is this personal journey of growth and empowerment that fuels our purpose: to share these tools and insights with others.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Our purpose at Recess is to empower women to embark on their own wellness journeys with confidence and authenticity. By providing practical, evidence-based guidance and fostering a supportive community, we aim to inspire women to prioritize their well-being and cultivate the live they want to live in realistic, manageable ways.
Our new podcast connects listeners with experts in diverse fields, offering insights from understanding our place in the universe to practical tips on organic produce. We’re taking a brief break from publishing episodes to hone in on the best topics and ideas to cover in future episodes. We’ve also made a shift from offering an annual, multi-day retreat to hosting more intimate, single-day workshops. We feel this move better serves our community of busy, growth-focused women looking for attainable opportunities to learn and engage.
This period of slowing down to speed up is one that we’re so excited about. We can’t wait to up-level our content and in-person offerings to bring to our audience this summer!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey, three things stand out as particularly impactful:
Resilience: The ability to bounce back from setbacks and challenges has been crucial. Before launching Recess, I was recently divorced from someone who struggled with alcohol abuse. I had $100 to my name and was convinced that no one would ever love me again. Not exactly the picture of resilience. Through therapy, mindfulness practices, and so many other concepts that we explore at Recess, I was able to not just pull myself out of a negative situation, but completely rehabilitate my life. I paid off my debt, I’m in the best physical shape of my life, and I have the tools to know that, should the worst happen, I could do it again. Nothing scares me now because I know the power of that kind of reliance.
Staying Curious: Being adaptable and open to change has allowed me to navigate uncertainty and seize opportunities for growth. This also means getting out of your comfort zone and, for me, getting out of my own way. I started saying yes to new experiences and ideas. My mind was open to infinite possibilities, because, frankly, if it wasn’t I was hopeless. There was no middle ground, so I chose to open my mind and body to experience the world in a way I hadn’t ever considered before. I took time to absorb information before jumping to an opinion. This allowed me to see countless paths forward and gave me hope.
“Just do the d*** thing!”: Don’t wait for the perfect moment, just put yourself out there. Do something. Anything! This means facing fears of failure, embracing imperfection, and the scariest part, letting people see you (the real you). As they say, those who matter don’t mind and those who mind don’t matter. So just embrace the journey and trust in your ability to learn and grow through experience.
