We recently connected with Matia Buggs and have shared our conversation below.
Matia, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I think it’s important to be resilient no matter what you go through. Life comes with its fair share of punches….punches that I’ve dealt with a lot. But I truly have a foundation in God, and just knowing that He cares about the little things that happen to me in life means a lot.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Matia Buggs and the three greatest words I would choose to describe myself are patient, kind, and hard-working. I’m a wife, entrepreneur, Washingtonian, and I work a 9-5!
I actually came up with the idea for Innovative Minds Media (IMM) in grad school while attending American University in 2016. I had originally made IMM to be called P3 (Picture Perfect Promotions). The idea behind it was the company being a pitch consulting company for local talent, including film students and professionals who are working on a film treatment, business plan, or script.
But in 2023, I made the pivot for IMM to become more of a media and entertainment platform, where I showcase entrepreneurs with one-on-one interviews and upload them on YouTube. Our mission at IMM is to effectively highlight and honor women of color, as our motto is true to our passion. We are redefining women, brands, and beyond, because we are more than entrepreneurs, although that is at the core of what we do. We are mothers, wives, 9-5 workers, and everything in between. IMM is that platform that celebrates who we are whole-heartedly, women who value ourselves, our businesses, our minds, wellness, and lifestyles.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I would have to say my number one is patience! That’s always necessary to have. Kindness would be number two, and then number three would be resiliency. Also, don’t just rest on your laurels. No one just “arrives,” and no one is a guru. Keep learning.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
I have a few people to thank!
My husband, Horace, has been immensely supportive in so many ways. He’s always attending my events and offering a fresh perspective. He’s amazing, and always so comforting and kind! You always need a supportive spouse when you’re an entrepreneur!
Alexis Brown, my close friend and extended family, has also been in my corner. We just vibe and are cut from a similar cloth. We’re both creative individuals who thrive off passion, so for the both of us to be in a similar industry is amazing because we can support one another and reach the top together.
I also want to thank every single family member who was supported me, my mother Mamie, mother in love Le’Ontyne Buggs, nephews, cousins, especially Angelica Santiago, my fellow entrepreneurial queen, and sisters, Danita, and Ursilla, who specifically came all the way to DC for my Social Media Launch Party, which was definitely a vibe! I also have a slew of entrepreneurial friends who always have my back, definitely a tribe, Jessica Green, Shenea Brown, Enjoli Lauderdale, LaToya Davis, Jessyca Byrd, Tiffon Jones, Akua Robinson, Agnes Erskine, Valerie Dix, my church tribe, LaTonya Terrell, and Valery Whitfield, my MUA ….. (Look I tried my best, sorry if I forgot anyone, but thank you all)!
