Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Yuwei (Rita) Li. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Yuwei (Rita), appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I explore activities beyond art to broaden my interests and knowledge. My work draws inspiration from the rich histories of diverse cultures, mythologies, architecture, and nature. To keep my creativity alive, I travel to various cities, visit museums, and occasionally go hiking to immerse myself in nature. Sometimes, even small moments in life serve as inspiration for significant design projects.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a concept artist working in the game industry, and I enjoy creating fantasy worlds and bringing my imagination to life through concept art and illustration. One of my passions lies in designing imaginative environments.
From a young age, I’ve been obsessed with the imaginary worlds in games and movies. This passion led me to pursue a career as a concept artist, where I bring fictional environments to life. While I may not have the opportunity to explore every real-world culture and landscape personally, I use them as inspiration for my concept art. I hope that these visualizations can be shared and experienced by everyone through video games, movies, or animation
In the past, my concept art has been recognized in competitions, including Vega Digital Awards Platinum winner, Communication Arts Shortlist, and London International Creative Competition Finalist. I am very honored to receive these accolades, and I will continue to create even more impressive work.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
In my journey as an artist, I consider curiosity, passion, and adaptability to be the most impactful qualities. Often, my design projects are born from discoveries or learnings from curiosity. I continually remind myself to stay open-minded and embrace new knowledge. It is my persistence and passion that keep me going forward. Additionally, I believe that adaptability plays a crucial role. The ability to adapt to changing trends, technologies, and artistic styles ensures that my work remains relevant and fresh.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
My most significant area of growth has been my increased involvement with the artistic community. Currently, I serve as a judge for the Rookie Awards 2024, and I’m also a mentor at the IGDA (International Game Developers Association), where I provide support to budding artists. Being part of the juror panel and the association is a great honor for me. These roles have allowed me to actively contribute to the artist community and engage with the next generation of talented creators. As I review the work of entrants, it reminds me of my own journey as a rookie artist and motivates me to keep being creative in my work.
