We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cookie the Comedian a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Cookie the, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I keep my creativity alive by living my regular life, being a single mom of two kids, as well as being a comedian for the past 13 years I turn a lot of pain into laughter. Dealing with a failed marriage, public humiliation behind the reason for my marriage failed, to my depression and my weight loss. I decided to empowered everybody with my story, so in 2019 I begin to write a web series called “ Bad Decisions through My Vision” it based on the true events of my marriage and after about the bad decisions we make for our family members, friends and significant others.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I have been a comedian for the past 13 years, I got my start on a Ski Trip where Comedisn Gerald Kelly was hosting and I was at dinner just talking and he over heard me and asked to speak to me and the rest was history. I have done shows all over
NYC, Baltimore , St. Thomas , Atlanta as well as performing on the legendary Apollo Theater stage where I opened for the legendary Queen of Comedian Mo’nique.
I have spend most of my career under Team Capone which was ran by the legend Comedian Capone.
In 2018 after my failed marriage and public humiliation and my mental breakdown, I begin my new project which is a based on true events a web series perming on YouTube on April 27th 2024 called BAD DECISIONS THROUGH MY VISION. The web series is about my failed marriage and my Bad Decisions after that. It will display a series of Bad Decisions that we all make in life for love family and friends.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The skills that I have learn in this business and as I build my brand and business is always stand for something because you will fall anything, set your boundaries and don’t break on them, be very direct and always keep your paperwork in order. In this world people like to take advantage of you I have encountered so many people that will never take accountability and be transparent. You have to develop tough skin in this business.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
The most helpful in helping me overcome my challenges and help me build and develop the essential skills qualities and knowledge, is my brothers in comedy Omar Thompson of Thompson Studios and Marcus Banks they taught me to keep going they allowed me to be my authentic self. Then there my long time friend Justin who is also helping with my web series he taught me patience and that what’s going to be will always be and giving up is not an option.
