We were lucky to catch up with Emma Westbrook recently and have shared our conversation below.
Emma, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
Creativity flows through every facet of my life, intertwining seamlessly with my professional pursuits and personal passions. As a graduate of Fashion Institute of Technology, I’ve cultivated a disciplined yet dynamic approach to creative expression. Yet, my childhood experiences, particularly my mother’s knack for creativity in everyday activities like event planning, gift-giving, and home décor, have profoundly influenced my perspective on creativity.
Now, I see my creative journey as a dual expression. In my textile design role, I meticulously blend color and form, following a structured path. Conversely, my exploration of creativity through witchcraft is boundless and playful. From infusing dinner recipes with intentional herbs to curating playlists that summon ancient deities, I find freedom in this non-linear realm. For me, witchcraft serves as a medium through which I express and nurture my creativity. Exploring the limitless possibilities within this realm keeps my imagination thriving and my creative spirit constantly renewed.
As an entrepreneur, I adopt a similar mindset, especially because my business centers on witchcraft. Embracing a deeply creative approach to my craft allows me to seamlessly integrate that essence into my business strategies. In this symbiotic relationship, where witchcraft serves as the medium, my business emerges as a canvas. I derive immense artistic fulfillment from crafting unique tarot readings, designing courses and mentorship programs, hosting workshops, and creating digital assets that support my visions.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My name is Emma (she/her) and I have been practicing the art of witchcraft for over a decade. By nurturing my own connection to the energy around me, I have discovered the wonderful and whimsical spirit of the universe and witnessed the transformative power of magic firsthand. I believe that every witch has their own unique magic. Throughout my journey, I have not only cultivated a nurturing and grounding practice for myself, but also developed a talent for helping fellow witches in embrace their inherent magical abilities and finding their own extraordinary path. My passion for helping others amplify their craft and unlock their magic has become a guiding force in my life. Witnessing witches embrace their magic truly warms my soul. Through my guidance and support, I aim to provide the tools and knowledge needed to navigate the mystical realm with confidence, respect, and authenticity.
Within my business, I offer a diverse range of services tailored to different needs and preferences. These include personalized one-on-one tarot readings, where I occasionally integrate astrology to provide a deeper, more intimate experience. Additionally, my podcast, “Woes of a Witch,” serves as a captivating space where I openly share my personal journey and experiences as a witch, inviting listeners into the enchanting world I inhabit. On Patreon, I host monthly rituals or classes via Zoom, lead group tarot readings, and provide follow-up journal prompts to foster deeper reflection and integration of the experiences shared.
However, my most cherished offering is my role as a witchcraft mentor. In this role, I work closely with individuals on a one-on-one basis, guiding and supporting them in developing their unique and personalized witchcraft practice. Drawing from over a decade of occult knowledge, divination skills in tarot, and a boundless creative spirit, I empower those who seek to embark on the magical path with confidence and clarity.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Developing my intuition has been crucial as a psychic, but I’ve found it equally impactful as an entrepreneur. In my line of work, which is deeply intimate and involves connecting with people in vulnerable ways, trusting my intuition is paramount. From planning launches to creating content and resources, I align everything with my natural rhythms and intuitive spirit. This approach feels both natural and healing, especially considering how capitalist structures often stifle this kind of intuition, particularly in traditional employment settings.
Equally important is learning to set clear boundaries, both with clients and myself. Given the intimacy of my work, it’s easy for lines to blur between client relationships and personal connections. It’s vital to recognize when to step back, even if the work doesn’t always feel like work. Balancing time between work, loved ones, hobbies, nature, and my private spiritual practice, separate from what I share publicly, is an ongoing dance. While I am inherently open and derive immense joy from sharing my spiritual journey, I also deeply value the mystery and sanctity inherent in the occult.
Finally, stepping outside my comfort zone and putting myself out there has been key to growing my business. Whether it’s applying to local markets, launching a podcast, or proudly owning the title of witchcraft mentor, each step has been powerful. It’s common to doubt whether people will resonate with our message or offerings, but reflecting on the art and media that captivates me reminds me that humans are drawn to seeing a celebration of unique lifestyles. Once I moved past my hesitations and embraced the vulnerability of showing up authentically, doors began to open, and they continue to do so when I am willing to take that leap.
Overall I think my advice for other business owners and creatives is to know yourself, trust yourself, and like yourself. Once you have done that work, which is so much easier said than done and probably will require the support of an incredible therapist, everything else will fall into place.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is someone who feels a magnetic pull towards magic and seeks to nurture their spiritual journey in a deeply personal manner. I often collaborate with individuals who may not yet feel comfortable embracing the title of Witch but desire to live in a way that authentically reflects their magical essence. Additionally, I work closely with those seeking to liberate themselves from rigid, dogmatic, organized religious structures, helping them discover a path that aligns harmoniously with their inner energy.
As I mentioned earlier, witchcraft serves as a conduit for creativity, attracting many artists and creators to my practice. I delight in introducing this unique perspective to them, fostering a deeper connection to their craft. Ultimately, my ideal client is someone who yearns to delve into the rich tapestry of themes and symbols surrounding them, weaving these profound messages into meaningful spiritual journeys.
