We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Martin Davis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Martin, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I keep my creativity alive by consistently Working, Training, Auditioning, Watching Great Film and TV, and Helping others Achieve their Goals. I make it a point to do a few of these things every single day. It keeps the creative juices flowing, and keeps me excited about the industry and my journey in the industry.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a guy who spent 30+ Years in the Security Industry. Armed and Unarmed Guard Services, Executive Protection and Private Investigations. My youngest son D’Andre now 12, started in the Entertainment Industry when he was 4 Years Old. While taking him on Auditions, Call Backs, and On Set, I got BIT by the Acting BUG. Once I retired from Security in 2019, I decided to venture into Acting. I started out doing Background on all the Major TV shows in Chicago. Then with the help of BackStage, I started doing College Films, Independent Films, Commercials, and Voice Over Work. Now I’m a Full Time Actor and Voice Over Artist. It’s Been an INCREDIBLE Journey!!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
My Communication Skills, Business Accumate, and Music Writing and Producing Skills all played an intricate role in my success in this industry. Being a Great Communicator is essential in this business. When you can talk to anyone, at anytime, on any level with confidence, it truly makes you stand out in a room.
Being a strong business person, helps you make the BEST Deals for you and your career. You’re not afraid to ask for “What You’re Worth”. You keep great records, and follow up and follow through on your business deals.
Being comfortable in the Studio as a Musician and Producer, played an essential role in my Voice Over Work. Setting up my Professional Home Studio, and being efficient with my Software made it an easy transition into Voice Over Work.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
I have to say that, Joseph Pearlman Acting Academy and his online Actor Training Course has played the most significant role in my Acting Career. Joseph’s classes provided me with the Tools, Confidence, and Strategies to “Bring My Best Self” to an Audition and to Set. Being Confident and Brave enough to take risk, make bold choices, and bring your unapologetic self into ANY Room, in front of ANYONE, is a Super Power. It definitely separates me from 90% of other Actors.
