Meet G Sandmire

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to G Sandmire . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

G, sincerely appreciate your selflessness in agreeing to discuss your mental health journey and how you overcame and persisted despite the challenges. Please share with our readers how you overcame. For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
When it comes to mental health issues and the challenges related to them I have had to learn to cope and overcome in new ways. I have bipolar disorder on top of severe anxiety and depression and have had to at times force myself out of my comfort zones to be able to focus on myself and my business. I’ve always coped by drawing and have turned that into something that I enjoy doing but also share with others.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m the owner of ArtBySandmage a queer art business founded in 2020 and turned mostly professional in 2022. I focus on turning my thoughts and feelings into works of art and creating beauty despite the chaos that I am going through. I tend to design skeletons and skulls or more bright colorful pieces depending on what I am going through as I am creating. I am currently working on designing my own website to exhibit and sell my art. As well as getting back into more physical media work not just digital art.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were impactful were the knowledge of practice- creating just for myself even if I didn’t think it would be good just practicing to get better at it. Knowing when to take a break- learning that it doesn’t have to be go go go all the time that you are allowed to rest and relax and take time for yourself. Being able to adapt and change- I wasn’t able to continue to do physical art at one point so being able to change over to digital art was important so that I was still able to create.

Advice for someone early in their journey is to do little things to practice what skills you want to work on, and practice them in different forms whether that be painting, drawing, sculptures, or just doodling being able to create in many forms can be beneficial if you are ever unable to create in one. Learning when to step back and say okay today is a rest day and I have no obligation to create is always going to be hard but you do need that to reset and avoid burning out.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m always looking to expand and collaborate with others it’s one of the areas I’ve been trying to grow in. If you like colorful whimsy things or skulls I’d be down to collaborate and create something cool with you. I’m available at my email sandmage43@gmail.com and check it usually 2-3 times a day during the week.
