We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jenny Mahoney. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jenny below.
Jenny, we are so happy that our community is going to have a chance to learn more about you, your story and hopefully even take in some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Let’s start with self-care – what do you do for self-care and has it had any impact on your effectiveness?
Mental health walks! This is something I began doing after giving birth to my second son. I needed time in nature & sunshine to help me in those early postpartum days. It’s something that’s stuck and that I continue to prioritize. No scrolling Instagram, no podcasts, just me and nature. Sometimes I’ll play worship music on Spotify. It’s like giving my brain a chance to breathe and catch up from the constant consumption of information we experience these days with news outlets and social media. I always come back from my walks feeling refreshed, grounded, and in a more creative headspace. Some of my best ideas happen on these walks!
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a registered dietitian with specialized training in functional medicine to help my clients uncover the root of the symptoms they’re experiencing. My specialties include digestive issues, acne, period problems & birth control breakups. I discovered the world of functional medicine by happenstance as I was going through my own struggle with post birth control syndrome. I got married in July 2017 & quit birth control cold turkey shortly after. I felt fine, initially, but around the 3-month mark, I began losing a ton of hair, I gained weight without any changes in my diet or exercise habits, I developed painful cystic acne along my jaw, and my moods were on a rollercoaster. After months of struggling with these symptoms, I brought my concerns to my OB/GYN; she told me to give it time and that my hormones would eventually stabilize. I felt so lost, confused, and overwhelmed as I began to wonder if this was just my new normal. I began doing my own research & discovered that the cluster of symptoms I was experiencing had a name and that what I was experiencing was very common after quitting birth control. I also learned ways that nutrition and lifestyle can help to support balanced hormones, which is when my eyes really opened up to the world of functional medicine. In 2018, I enrolled in a graduate certificate program for dietitians in integrative and functional medicine and launched my private practice in January 2019. The work I do now just feels like home. I love it so much; I would do it for free if I could. There’s nothing more fulfilling than witnessing women develop a sense of body literacy, take back their health, and come home to their bodies after years of struggling with symptoms. I serve clients in a 1:1 coaching container where we work intimately over the course of 4 months & use detailed lab testing to help uncover underlying issues/imbalances that are contributing to their symptoms. We develop a specific healing plan based on my assessment and lab testing and watch the magic unfold! I also offer an online course called Birth Control Breakup Academy where I teach women everything they need to know about their hormones and how to transition off birth control as seamlessly and symptomlessly as possible.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Persistence, a thirst for knowledge, & not being too proud to pivot when needed. My advice is to never compare your beginning to someone else’s middle. You have to start somewhere, and it will take time to grow. Comparison really can be the thief of joy.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal clients are women in their 20’s and 30’s who are struggling with chronic gut, skin, or hormone symptoms or who are anticipating a birth control breakup or have already quit birth control & are in the throes of post birth control syndrome. Women who are driven, self-motivated, and who have a desire to become more in tune with their body are exactly the type of clients I love working with!
