Meet Rebekka Ling

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rebekka Ling. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Rebekka, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
My number one ‘self care’ or foundation is keeping/maintaining my faith. Without it I I’m lost and easily distracted with things we might deem important but are not, in light of the bigger picture. Helps me to stay focused and in position for my purpose. Even if it may look different from what the mainstream does.

Knowing I’m a daughter of the Most High and made in His image, keeps me rooted. It took me years to fully accept and grasp that that is where my confidence lies. Our value comes from God and not society or people. It also makes me want to take better care of myself and my physical and mental health (body, mind and spirit). You have the responsibility over these things given to you, while living life. It hasn’t always been this way for me, so I pretty much can tell the difference ;).

I workout almost daily, fitness and enjoy doing Pilates, walk or bike outside.. spend a lot of time on my own as well especially after busy days. It gives good energy and strength. Taking rest days is also important. Counting your blessings and staying grateful even when there are days you struggle.

It really changes the whole perspective, knowing you can’t control everything and be happy or content in the moment.

Besides keeping a daily schedule, writing a small diary (also if you’re a non creative) helps keeping your mind clear. Prayer as well.

All these things have proven to be effective in keeping my mental health and peace over the years.

I used to talk often with friends but for very personal stuff or plans I rather talk to my therapist once in a while, or write. Such a blessing, I can recommend it to anyone. It’s safer to vent to a therapist then to a friend or colleague. They hand you great practical tools as well. (If they’re good) It’s like talking to a bestie without feeling like you’re too much;). And again, maintaining my relationship with God.

Being proud of accomplishments and celebrate them!

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Hi all! My name is Rebekka Ling, I am a performing artist, songwriter/composer and teacher based in Amsterdam.

I grew up in a musical home, have been doing music, playing instruments and singing since forever .

I studied jazz at the conservatory and toured/recorded with different bands and artists for years, while pursuing and building my solo music career, writing own material and performing with my band.

The most exciting things are when new listeners discover your music after watching your show or finding it online for example. Connecting with fans as well as other art or music colleagues & artists that inspire you and vice versa.
Being able to travel and work on music in different continents has been a blast.

We’re all in this together, sharing our uniqueness with the world through art. I love working with children/youth too, passing on knowledge and skills and reminding myself to the childlike, pure view on life that’s still there somewhere:).

If you’d like to connect with my music endeavours, ii’s available on Apple Music, Spotify or YouTube etc:

I also did an inspiring film project in London of a novel series and have a collaboration going in Dallas after I performed in the US twice, Texas. More good things to come!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Be selective, know your value. Don’t spread yourself thin, for me personally it’s more about quality and being unique than to be seen everywhere with just anything too stay busy.

Knowing what you represent or stand for, makes it easier to say no to projects not meant for you.

I had to learn this over the years: be reliable and hold yourself accountable. I used to deal with anxiety or insecurity as we all do at times, which often caused me to elude or run from confrontation. Learn to communicate or express what you want, be clear about it. Be respectful towards others in the business.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed I take a time or rest when I can. I don’t feel guilty anymore for doing so, so shouldn’t you. Listen to your body.

As artists we are sensitive and our senses easily overstimulated. So moments of silence or doing fun activities outside your profession is so important and can really help.

I love going to the cinema on solo dates, go for a walk at the beach (or forrest, nature) treat yourself to some nice food or whatever makes you happy. See a concert or show. Fill up your tank, mentally and spiritually.

Sleep. Also since the pandemic I go out much less than I used to, you won’t see me unless i really want to or if I think it adds something.

Don’t wait till the last moment, plan it if possible once a week or whatever works for you of course.

Working out is a favorite activity that lets off steam as well. Keep some space in your agenda, don’t plan every little thing leave room for the unexpected:)

Hope these help:)
