We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Melissa Kim Corter. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Melissa below.
Melissa, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
As a highly empathic, intuitive child, I was fascinated with other people’s basements. Dark, unexplored spaces enthralled me, and my insatiable curiosity toward the hidden dimensions of the mind led to decades of exploring the shadow dynamics within the human psyche and in nature. My curiosity and pursuit to ‘look under there’ never went away, and now I see this quirky trait as an indicator of an investigative mind, an asset that has serves me as a depth psychologist and writer.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I study darkness. As a Depth Psychologist my gift is holding other people’s darkness. My unique style of writing blends creative and symbolic forms found in forensics, film, and fairy tales. After twenty years as a certified hypnotherapist and consultant, my work with the dark night of the soul, psychopathy, and encounters with darkness now imbue my writing. My work sometimes makes people uncomfortable as it draws on and celebrates the macabre, dark, misunderstood, and melancholy dimensions of personality. I have a master’s degree in Depth Psychology with an emphasis on Jungian Archetypal studies and I am pursuing a Ph.D. at Pacifica Graduate Institute. I am currently writing my dissertation on psychopathy and the western shadow.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most impactful qualities are those I tried to suppress during my teenage years. My intuition made others uncomfortable, I just knew things that could not be explained and had accurate premonitions. I was drawn to death at a young age, psychological thrillers and studying psychopathic individuals began early on. I recall watching The Shining at five years old, and Poltergeist was my favorite movie. Strangers would tell me extremely personal details, before I was a teenager grown women would tell me their secrets and then remark how good they felt after speaking with me. It wasn’t until decades later that I found the value in my unique gifts and interests. There is value in the patterns, behaviors, and interests of our childhoods, I believe we each have authentic interests and it is part of our path to recall the magic and enchantment of these moments, even though others may not understand or be able to relate to them.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is the student or reader who knows she has lots to say and she feels deeply. She’s an empath yet struggles to express her emotions. She’s creating boundaries and aware of the ways she has abandoned herself. She’s drawn to the light and on a journey of reclamation, gathering the pieces of her soul, collecting the shards, and integrating the wisdom of impactful moments. She wants to believe she has healed, yet somewhere in her soma, in these pieces, stories remain… she longs to channel her wisdom, speak her truth, and shine her light, yet she unconsciously fears her depths. She’s heard of the shadow but doesn’t really know hers, for she avoids her discomfort and is caught in a repetitive cycle that keeps her blind to the origin of her troubles.
