Meet Violetta Nyx

We recently connected with Violetta Nyx and have shared our conversation below.

Violetta, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
Fun little fact about me, I grew up in a hyper-religious Catholic family. None of my immediate family or even extended family has tattoos or really goes against the grain in any way. So as you can imagine, when I went to my parents and made it known I wanted to pursue art and eventually tattooing as a career, I was met with a forceful NO and pretty much shut out from even discussing it. No matter what I said it was never something my family would ever accept or support. I realized this and though it hurts not to have family be there for you I also knew that their opinions are not the end game for the entire world and my life! So despite feeling alone I set out to learn to tattoo. I found myself going through a three year apprenticeship, drawing everyday, working 7 days a week with minimal time for myself, and generally never giving up no matter how hard it was. Fast forward 9 years and not only am I a successful tattoo artist, I’ve been able to buy myself a home, multiple vehicles, and anything I’ve wanted all on my own with the career I’ve built for myself! It’s always been said that hard work pays off and I have to agree that no matter where you come from or the circumstances around you, if you really want something and don’t let yourself be discouraged even when everything is against you, anything really is possible!

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a tattoo artist in the Denver/Boulder area of Colorado. Being a tattoo artist is more of a dream job than I could have ever asked for! Not only has it allowed me to constantly indulge in my passion for art, learn, and grow to new heights; but also to meet so many amazing people in all walks of life, share my art with them, as well as help them through difficult times or great times by creating art with them! One of the main things I strive to do as a tattoo artists is give my clients a piece that means something to them and that they will love forever.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I have always had a passion for art, even before I knew I wanted to pursue art as a career i drew almost everyday and tried to learn as much as I could on how to get better. If art of any kind is your end goal for a career I feel this is key. You have to have the drive to WANT to get better even when you’ve been doing it for years, to stay successful. I am also a bit of a perfectionist about my work and have high attention to detail, these have definitely helped me improve my work and push me to outdo myself constantly. The best way to improve is simply to keep doing it consistently! You will get better!

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
Unfortunately, the most impactful thing my parents have done for me is choose not to support me in adulthood. They did instill a good work ethic in me from a young age, which I am greatful for and has helped me become successful. However by not being there for me, they really forced me to go out and do things on my own, persevere, and really be my own last line of defense. Because of this I have realized my own strength and held it as one of the the most precious and integral qualities that has shaped me! It’s hard for a young person to realize what they are capable of but once you do you really are unstoppable!
