Jill Turnbull’s path to finding her purpose is inspiring and deeply personal. Growing up in Australia, a place known for its strong environmental values, Jill deeply appreciated the natural world, especially the ocean. This connection to nature guided her through an impressive career as a freelance hairstylist and makeup artist, where she gained an intimate understanding of the effects beauty products can have on people.
This backdrop set the stage for her nearly five-decade-long career as a globally recognized freelance hairstylist and makeup artist. Working with top media and entertainment personalities, she honed her understanding of beauty products’ profound effects on our hair, skin, and bodies.
However, a pivotal moment in prepping for a Vogue Italia assignment in 2019 marked a significant shift in Jill’s career trajectory. The brief called for only sustainable products with written guarantees from the brands. To her surprise, none of the brands she had trusted for years could provide this confirmation. This was a big wake-up call. Confronted with the pervasive greenwashing in the beauty industry, she was compelled to take action.
With sheer determination and armed with shea butter and aloe vera, Jill overcame the challenges of that Vogue Italia shoot. More significantly, however, she emerged with a new mission: to transform the beauty industry. She launched her own brand, Jill Turnbull Beauty, with a firm commitment to creating products that are not only effective but also authentically eco-friendly. From selecting ingredients to designing packaging and shipping methods, Jill is personally involved in every aspect, ensuring they align with her sustainability pledge.
Finding her purpose wasn’t just about blending her passion for beauty with her eco-conscious upbringing; it was also about seeing a gap in the industry and deciding she was the one to fill it. My journey in the beauty industry spans nearly five decades, starting in Australia, where I honed my skills as a hairstylist on editorial shoots for major publications and with renowned celebrities. This wealth of experience and insights has shaped my passion for sustainable beauty essentials, leading me to launch Jill Turnbull Beauty. At Jill Turnbull Beauty, we are not just another beauty brand. We are a movement, a commitment to sustainable haircare. Our products are meticulously formulated to meet the high standards of professional stylists and the ethical expectations of environmentally conscious consumers. We believe in delivering top performance without compromising our planet’s health.
Currently, we are actively expanding Jill Turnbull Beauty. We’re broadening our product range and exploring new markets, all while maintaining our commitment to sustainability. This growth includes enhancing our haircare line and introducing content to meet our customers’ diverse styling needs. Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey in founding and growing Jill Turnbull Beauty, I can pinpoint three key qualities that have been instrumental: resilience, industry knowledge, and a commitment to sustainability. Advice for starting out: Focus on building a solid foundation in these areas. Equip yourself with the right skills and knowledge, and align your values with your business practices. Remember, the path to success is often non-linear. Stay adaptable, keep learning, and don’t lose sight of what makes your approach unique.
1. Resilience
Resilience is crucial in the beauty industry. Numerous challenges have existed, from the initial product development phase to navigating the complexities of the market, especially with a focus on sustainability. Developing resilience involves embracing failures as learning opportunities. My advice is to stay patient and persistent for those early in their journey. Challenges and setbacks are not inevitable; they’re valuable lessons that teach you to adapt and persevere.
2. Industry Knowledge
A deep understanding of the technical aspects of haircare and the dynamics of the beauty industry has been essential. This includes everything from the science behind hair health to trends and consumer behavior. To build this knowledge, I recommend immersing yourself in the industry through continuous learning—attend workshops, follow leading figures, and stay updated with industry research. Networking can also provide insights and opportunities that are not readily accessible through other means.
