Meet William Ramsey

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful William Ramsey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

William, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I get my work ethic from my father. He has worked hard his entire life, holding down several jobs at a time. He instilled in me the importance of hard work, combined with discipline.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I consider myself an artist entrepreneur: musician, writer, and content creator. In the last 6 months, I launched an alternative brand called MyEmoDiaries, which focuses on alternative music and culture. This brand has been a life-changing experience. It started out as just me throwing dance parties that centered around indie rock and emo music, and then evolved into me writing books about the history of emo. Much to my surprised, Tiktok blew the book up and as a result, I have sold nearly 1,000 copies as of this writing.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The top three things that have helped me in my entrepreneurial journey have been: discipline, consistency, and being willing to pivot. Whatever it is you are pursuing or creating, you need to be disciplined, which is fundamentally a different thing than waiting to have “motivation.” Discipline has nothing to do with motivation and everything to do with eventually accomplishing your goals. However, you need to be consistent at what you’re doing in order to see any results–you have to keep showing up and be willing to pivot when things don’t go as planned–and trust me, many things will not go as planned lol.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
They always encouraged me to pursue creativity and art. I grew up around art and music and I don’t know a world without those things.
