Meet Shanta Hogan Walker

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shanta Hogan Walker. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation; we’ve shared it below.

Hi Shanta, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I found my true God giving purpose in life after experiencing a very devastating event in my life. November 2017 my family, and I lost everything we had and became homeless for 92 days. Life happened even in the mist of working and putting two children time through college at the same we were unable to keep up. This was something that I never experienced and was too ashamed to ask for HELP! I cried every night out to God asking for help and clear directions so that we could begin to come out of this situation. God promises me that he would bring our family out, however I was told not be ashamed and to tell what I have been through. I also began to reach back to help other mothers and families that were facing some of the same situations. March 2018 God gave me the vision to start my nonprofit organization, which is called Cora’s Helping Hands Inc. Our mission is to help families to recover from homelessness and be able to thrive again. July 10,2020 the organization became an official 501c3 charitable organization.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Shanta Hogan Walker has worked very closely and hands on with families facing homelessness. Through her organization she hosted many community events throughout the year to help bring resources to the Community. Each year Cora’s Helping Hands hosts a back-to-school giveaway on the West Side of Chicago. Shanta has also created a scholarship foundation in honor of her father. The James G Terry scholarship is for first generation students from Illinois that will be attending college in the fall, this scholarship will help with books, dorm rooms supplies and other personal items to ensure that they are ready for a successful school year. Shanta has also created a safe place for women that have been facing hardship with many different things in life. Shanta has encouraged them to share their trails and experience that has become their testimony. “HER STORY HER STRENGTH” is held yearly honoring different women in the community.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
II would say having Faith, patience and love are all the Key things that has kept me on my journey. Some advice I would like to share never be afraid to ask for help. Never be ashamed to share your story of the things you are facing, because there is someone who maybe going through something similar and sharing your experience can offer Hope.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am looking forward to collaborating and partnering with like-minded people and organizations that are working diligently in the community, especially in areas of homelessness.
