We were lucky to catch up with Joyce Chesley Hayward recently and have shared our conversation below.
Joyce, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I get my work ethic from a combination of sources – initially from my parents. I watched them work hard and be persons of their word. Growing up in a time when RACIAL segregation had recently ended, I understood the concept of having to be better than my peers in order to be considered somewhat equal. Over time I watched others and saw what I liked and didn’t like and took cues from that. However ultimately as I became a woman of faith, I found that my work ethic needed to be steeped in the Bible, and I use Jesus and Christian Principles as my compass. So scripture is a big factor for me and the way I operate and my work ethic. There are some ‘common’ rules that persons use and refer to, that are actually scriptural. Like the ‘golden rule” Do unto others as you would have them do unto you is an example and there are others as well.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am what I call a “Business Ballerina” I have also been called a Mary Poppins of accounting . I help business owners to be profitable with the skills I’ve gained over 40 years in business and in my time as a Certified Public Accountant and business and financial consultant. As the other hat I wear is that of a Minister (an ordained Rev Dr in the AME church) who loves to dance for the Lord, I have been told that I help businesses and business owners to be their best selves by giving a spoonful of sugar as the medicine (the tough love/ADVICE) goes down :-)!
I’m growing a community called L.I.F.E. – for Ladies In Faith and Enterprise to have a place where we can connect, support and encourage one another.
along my journey I have found that business owners often work WAY to hard, and with that I have developed ReJoyce EXPERIENCES where I help busy business owners to Whooosaaaahhh when they come to Bermuda – but ensuring they relax, rejuvenate, reenergize and recharge.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Empathy/Understanding listening
Financial acumen
In everything we do we should ensure we put ourselves in other’s shoes so we can understand what they need – as persons and as business owners. And give others grace as and when need be by being empathetic/showing empathy
In order to do that – we have to listen and listen attentively so we really ‘hear’ what persons are saying; hear their hearts. That is important in business as well as in ministry
And having financial acumen has helped me as an external CFO , as a person, and in helping others. I ALSO believe having the basics right in our finances helps us to have a strong foundation for our businesses.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Yes I am looking for persons to partner and collaborate with for Business Retreats to Bermuda, also persons who may want to join US with growing the community of Ladies in Fatih and Enterprise AND/OR who may want to speak with our ladies and impart to them.
