We were lucky to catch up with FROM HELL recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi FROM HELL, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
When beginning the process of building a brand you have to keep applying pressure. You have to work everyday in order to stay relevant. I was self employed in the construction field for while pushing myself working 19 hour days consistently. I’ve just had this work non stop mentality engraved in me for a long time now. i try and explain to others if you can devote 8 hours a day to a job you hate why not devote some time to your own creative outlets. i enjoy and truly love what i do and the act of creating is just so peaceful and serene to me. I absolutely love being about to devote my time to my own brand today. I’m grateful to do all this and it’s all really a gift.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
So my back story is centered on being in the grips of addiction for most of my life. I spent over a decade trying to run from myself any way possible. Making my own clothing was pipe dream even in those times. It took so much pain and suffering to get to where I am today. Even buried some of my best friends while I was trying to find a way to sobriety. All of that built me into what I am today. I started making clothing roughly six years ago, I’ve been clean and sober for over four years now. After my last relapse I really reflected on everything and decided it was time to really make the dive and focus on making clothing. I’m sitting in my second studio location bigger than the first one. even as I respond to these questions I’m hit with memories of all the crazy times I survived. its really a miracle to be clean and sober do all this. when I was in hell my dreams of my future didn’t look anything like this. I’m just amazed really. when you decide to separate yourself from things or situations that really harm you and seek a solution you can really flourish in life. I do my best to share my story to try and motivate the youth. I try and help as many people as possible passing on my knowledge of walking thru the darkness into paradise. my brand in a way has saved my life and its giving me such a huge purpose in life to keep growing and evolving in a positive way. I’m constantly trying to learn advertising, how to market, executing photoshoots, and creating new product. its all so positive for me to focus on.
I create stand alone garments, pieces with the intent to help you feel more comfortable in your own skin. Pieces have been shipped around the world.
Always keep your eyes peeled on my website for new one of a kind pieces or rare T shirt drops
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Purpose, audience, advertisement would be my top areas of knowledge to focus on. Me wanting to start a brand was always in the back of my mind. There are a million reasons why I do this but the main reason is how much internal growth I feel thru every piece I create. That feeling is just second to none. So audience would be the next area of knowledge. Take your product to your people. I create punk alternative clothing. Lots of leopard print patchwork collages of fabric. I try to market myself to that scene. That area of knowledge may seem like common sense but if your not making many sales its probably because your target audience doesn’t see your work. Advertisement is the area where I even have trouble with. I run simple adds online that help push my agenda but it doesn’t guarantee sales at times. The more money you put into your ad campaign the better your sales margin. I try to not advertise all the time and still push for organic growth. For me this thing isn’t a race. Its slow and steady for me but always moving upward. I spend a lot of time taking notes with youtube on this aspect.
We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
I really believe you have to go all in with something like this. no one else is going to believe in you but yourself. No one is going to push you to succeed but yourself. half measures avail us nothing. I have spent thousands of hours sewing, doing photo edits and sleepless nights at the studio. I believe in this with all my heart, its why I keep doing it year after year. I also know there is no end goal to it. I just want people to enjoy my clothing and really appreciate how much hard work I put into every piece to make it perfect. You’ll never find anything like what I create from anyone else but me. And all that came from the hard work, the sacrifice of going out with friends, not having a social life. I advance my brand everyday sometimes one inch at a time sometimes a mile. I think its totally worth it. I take a lot of pride in what I’m building with everyone else involved.
