We recently connected with Tay Spencer and have shared our conversation below.
Tay , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My mom! When I was a child I witnessed firsthand what it meant to work hard. For some time my mom worked two jobs and went to school at night. So witnessing her in all her glory at a young age I had no excuse.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I make people/things look and feel pretty. I typically create or enhance my client’s style by curating looks for special moments. I really enjoy the art of uplifting and empowering women to live boldly through fashion. I also don’t miss an opportunity to share the good news of our wonderful savior, Jesus Christ.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Confidence, the ability to learn and grow, and consistency, You must first have confidence in yourself, and your brand. If you don’t exude confidence in yourself how do you expect for others to buy into something, you are unsure of? Second, is the skill set and the flexibility to be a student of the arts. You must be continuously willing to learn, grow, and evolve to master your craft. If you possess both of those qualities, the only thing needed is consistency. When it gets difficult learn to show up for yourself even when others don’t. My granddad would often say, “Rome was not built in a day.” Sooner than later the people who respect and value your craft will come to you. Stay focused and disciplined. Always do your best and give your best!
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My dad would always tell me as a child even in my adult years, you can have anything you want out of life as long as you work towards it. I remember when I was 16/17 years old he made me get a job. Now as a teen, I didn’t quite understand why he was so persistent with me landing a job but now I understand. He was instilling in me a valuable work ethic and it taught me how to become a responsible adult. Little did I know taking customers’ orders, making pizzas, and showing up to work on time would help build character.
