We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marilyn Klisser . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marilyn below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Marilyn with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My Mom is a big part of my work ethic. She has always been and still is the hardest worker I know. I’ve seen how she finishes a job that she starts; and she takes a lot of pride in doing it the best she can. I feel I learned that from her, as it’s also very important to me to finish what I start and have pride in what I do, and to do it the best that I can. Even the little things. She taught me that all the daily “little things” matter, and to do your best with them, because it will them carry over to the “big things”.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
During Covid, I became an owner of what is now South Park Yoga. It was a scary time as we didn’t know what would happen with the yoga studio. It was closed down for a whole year during the worst of the pandemic. . Being on Zoom is what kept the business alive , but we honestly didn’t know if it would make it. At that time, memberships were down and there wasn’t much of an influx of new students.
I felt a rebrand was necessary, to refresh and renew. So we did a full rebrand during Covid . New name. New Website. Remodeled some. Downsized. Became more minimal. We did a lot of marketing, brought in some amazing new teachers, and really focused on our purpose, Which was offering a super zen space for the community to practice yoga, meditation, relaxation, healing and growth.
We’ve had thousands of new students since 2020 and the community has grown so much and is fully thriving. My husband and I are grateful.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Looking for what can be improved.
I believe keeping an open mind for possible improvements is essential. Not to get complacent or lazy because things are going so well. To stay very aware and observant and always have a watchful eye on all aspects of the business so as to make sure everything is running and continues to run optimally.
2. Being open to learning new skills
I had to learn a lot of new skills when I became an owner. Zoom, Website building, software programs, marketing, etc. it has helped me in my salon business as well
3. Doing my best in all things
It feels so good at the end of the day!
