We were lucky to catch up with Sistah Amahklè Young recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sistah Amahklè, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
It takes great confidence to take a leap of faith and trusting the process. You have to believe and show up for yourself even when no one else shows up for you.
I was afraid to go for what I wanted; however I went after it anyway. Confidence is the key to your success I feel. Even when you are afraid just do it anyway and trust you will develop your confidence!
I endured a lot of scars during my past experiences but that is how I learned.
My father and mother has always encouraged me and by them two and my community believing in me also gave me the confidence I needed to push through my life journeys. Gain your confidence now and the rest will follow and be aligned as it should.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am Amahklé, The name Amahklé derives from the origin Zulu meaning
the “Beautiful One.” I have been surrounded by musicians, singers and dancers all my life. I was intrigued with the sweet sound of music, creative expressions through movement and wanted to give it a shot myself. I first embraced dance at the age of 10 and completely fell in love with the art!
I was first introduced to the music by my father and at age 15 I became a lover of the culture. I began traditional African dance under the instruction of yeyeDandara Boyd. In that very space is where I found my inner uniqueness for the art form of dance!
Due to my past life experiences with being a teenage parent at 16yrs old and past life traumas I developed into becoming a Life Coach advocating for teen girls and adult women. I created LaMoves Afro-Blendz in 2019 now with current name LaMoves Afro-Blendz: Dance & Empowerment, LLC.
We empower women of color a space to heal from life traumas through a unique blend of life coaching and Afro dance. Our integrated approach combines affirmations with movement to foster a journey of healing, freedom, and acceptance. Within our supportive community setting, women find the strength and solidarity to embrace their true selves and acceptance.
