We were lucky to catch up with Steven Dorn recently and have shared our conversation below.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My father had a fascination with technology, especially when it came to cameras. We always had a camera around and when I got to highschool I had an interest in video production and editing. I would make video projects for class anytime I could. Unfortunately no one guided me to continue it and instead I was pushed into the medical field as a nurse.
Around 2016 I started to pick up interest in video editing and putting small travel vlogs together. A friend in 2017 asked me to film their wedding, so I did as much online research as I could. In doing so I saw how far video had come and what could be done with wedding films. From then on I decided I wanted to build a career in video production focusing heavily on wedding films.
When it comes to wedding filmmaking I feel it has such a unique experience to offer. Not only is everyone happy to be filmed, the wedding decor makes you feel like you’re filming on a set. Everything is decorated perfectly from the lighting to the florals and table scapes. What I later came to realize is how much I loved working with a team of creatives. We are all on the same event performing at our best. I absolutely love the teams I work with and bouncing creative ideas off one another.
My style is very documentary. I love capturing moments as they happen. I put a heavy emphasis on capturing guests experience at a wedding. So many films I watch are hyper focused on the couple, this is very important of course, but the real reason couple hire us is to see the entire day as a whole from as many perspectives as we can film. I feel the industry is moving in that direction and will continue to change and develop on that path.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
The biggest growth in my business in the last 12 months has been two things: Finding balance and growing my community.
I spent the last 12 months trying to find balance and appreciation for what I do. Finding spots of time for myself, my family and my friends. Reminding myself that this career gives me so much creativity, community and freedom, and to always keep that in mind.
Community has been huge in my business. Building strong trusting relationships with other creatives. I try to focus on being of service and a pleasant human being always. You can never be perfect, but put your focus on others is always the best policy in my book.
