We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jasmyn Henriquez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jasmyn, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I wasn’t the cool girl in high school—I never really fit into any group. I faced bullying over everything from the gap in my teeth to my body shape. Being called ‘J.Lo’ as I walked down the hallway was a way for them to tease me about my shape-it was never meant as a compliment. Peers in my classroom even accused me of lying about my heritage, doubting I was Latina because I didn’t look the ‘average’ Latina, long before ‘Afro-Latina’ was a well-known term.
This added to my feeling of isolation and made me feel deeply unworthy. Over time, however, I realized that their judgments reflected their issues, not mine. Developing my confidence and self-esteem started with embracing every part of myself, imperfections included. I learned to appreciate my unique qualities and turned what others saw as flaws into my strengths. Surrounding myself with people who uplifted me and engaging in activities that reinforced my self-worth were crucial steps.
Every positive step I took built the resilient, confident person I am today. It’s not about fitting into a mold; it’s about breaking it and making your own space where you shine the brightest.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a determined woman fueled by a mission to empower others through my personal experiences, which range from overcoming a divorce to establishing independence and navigating the dating scene. I realized I wasn’t truly ready for a new relationship. Instead, I focused on building my brand. A brief rekindling with my ex-husband further motivated me to concentrate on my business when our reconciliation didn’t work out.
These pivotal moments inspired the creation of my boutique, Styled Thru Life, which encapsulates the ethos ‘Forever Styled, Forever Confident.’ My offerings are carefully chosen to not only elevate style but also enhance confidence and empowerment. Each collection is curated with feedback from the customers, ensuring that I cater to their diverse needs while constantly improving and expanding the selection.
This year, I enhanced the shopping experience by introducing more styles available for try-ons by appointment, allowing for a personal and comfortable interaction with my products. Looking forward, I am dedicated to expanding my product range and increasing my impact within the fashion industry. I am actively seeking collaborations and investments to extend our reach. Thanks to platforms like TikTok, Styled Thru Life has connected with a vast audience, bringing in new customers and expanding the influence across multiple states. I am profoundly grateful for the trajectory of Styled Thru Life and the vision I hold for its future. It’s a journey marked by growth, learning, and meaningful connections, continually influencing the core of our brand.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I would have to say, resilience has been essential in the competitive and fast-paced fashion industry. It has allowed me to navigate through various challenges, including market fluctuations and personal hurdles. Building resilience involved setting clear goals and learning from every situation, which reinforced my ability to persevere through difficulties.
Customer insight has also been crucial. Truly understanding what my customers want and need has guided many of my decisions. This deep insight comes from actively engaging with my audience, monitoring market trends, and responding to feedback, which has been important in shaping my offerings to better meet customer desires.
Adaptability has been another cornerstone of my success. The fashion world is ever-evolving and being able to adjust my strategies—whether in marketing, adopting new technologies and even my personal development —has kept Styled Thru Life relevant and attuned to the changing needs and trends.
These qualities have not only supported my business’s growth but also prepared me to meet future challenges head-on, ensuring that Styled Thru Life continues to empower and inspire confidence through fashion.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
“Dare to Lead” by Brené Brown has influenced how I manage Styled Thru Life and navigate my professional life. The idea that vulnerability is a critical leadership strength has been transformative, allowing me to share my personal stories more openly. This authenticity has helped deepen connections with my audience, making them feel part of our journey and more engaged with the brand.
This openness is reflected in everything from the products I choose to the captions that accompany them on social media, which often draw from my own experiences. These elements bring a unique, relatable voice to my brand, resonating with my customers who see their own experiences and challenges reflected in our messaging.
By applying Brené Brown’s teachings, I have reinforced Styled Thru Life’s commitment to empowering women, ensuring that the actions consistently align with my values of authenticity and empowerment.
