We were lucky to catch up with Demi Boelsterli recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Demi, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
The ocean has been my best teacher. I grew up in a beach town surfing and playing in the ocean or rather fighting the sea. The power of the ocean is enough to teach anyone to be confident and humble at the same time. Developing a strong sense of confidence at a young age really helps me with the everyday problems that life throws at all of us.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My main focus for the last ten years has been abstract painting. To me it is the easiest tool of expression I have access to. The combination of chaos and control is mind numbingly beautiful. The feeling is very similar to surfing but in a much slower fashion. Right now my goals are to combine my love for both painting and surfing to bring hope, chaos and a bit of emotion to the world.
In the past I had a small clothing brand we ran out of my friends garage downtown. That lead into me collaborating with brands to make custom designs and apparel. I have really enjoyed working with different people to make their ideas come to life. I have been making videos lately with my new camera and really excited to see what’s to come of that.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The best skills that have helped me are discipline, knowing when to slow down, and putting the blinders on in order to live an alternative lifestyle. I was never planning on this being a way to house and feed myself but now that it’s working out I have to ignore the social pressers of my odd ball work schedule and the fact that I work when I want and rest when I need. It’s sometimes a bit difficult for me to relate to the standard 9-5 lifestyle and to not feel like maybe that’s what I should be doing. But the discipline and passion has kept me pushing.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
