Meet Jessica Bishop

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jessica Bishop. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jessica below.

Jessica, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
I’ve always had a strong sense of hope. From a young age, my family gave me a great deal of positive reinforcement and encouragement.

I was taught to believe I was capable of achieving any dream I set my mind to and that keeping a positive outlook and having faith in something bigger would help me along the way.

My grandparents in particular, set an example of this in various ways. My grandfather on my mother’s side was a Marine during WWII and survived Iwo Jima. Growing up he told us many stories and always had such gratitude for his life and his family. His unwavering faith and positivity about the goodness of people in the world had an immense impact on me.

My grandmother on my father’s side also instilled deep faith and hope in me. During a bout with non-Hodgkins lymphoma, she channeled her energy into writing a book to help others going through cancer. Appropriately titled, Faith, Hope, & Cancer — her dedication to serving others going through a similar struggle was a powerful testament to how optimism, gratitude, and giving back can have a ripple effect that will last for years to come.

I feel so lucky to have had such incredible influences in my life that have shaped me into the woman I am today, and I do my best to honor their legacy by showing gratitude, kindness, and optimism in my work and by serving others going through struggles I’ve walked through myself.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m the founder of a media company that helps couples navigate the wedding planning process while saving time, money, and stress. I founded The Budget Savvy Bride in 2008 while planning my own wedding, and it has since grown to be a nationwide resource, reaching millions of couples each year with our advice, tips, and tools.

What started as a personal journal evolved into a go-to destination for couples seeking guidance, resources, and savvy alternatives to make their wedding look luxe for less. In addition to our online publication, we also produce a top wedding podcast, The Bouquet Toss, and have a best-selling wedding planning book, The Budget-Savvy Wedding Planner & Organizer, which has sold over 250,000 copies!

Our motivation lies in helping couples plan a beautiful, meaningful wedding within their means, so they can start their marriage off on strong financial footing. We believe every wedding is a beautiful wedding and we love hearing from couples who’ve found our resources helpful. We recently launched our newest feature, The Savvy Wedding Guide, which is our vendor marketplace to help couples connect with wedding professionals in their local area to bring their big day to life.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my entrepreneurial journey, I can pinpoint three attributes that significantly steered my path: resilience, creativity, and community building.

Resilience has been my anchor in the tumultuous sea of running a business. The ability to persevere, even when faced with skepticism or financial constraints, allowed me to continuously innovate and find solutions where others saw dead ends. For those just beginning, my advice is to view failures not as setbacks but as learning opportunities. It’s about bouncing back with a stronger, more determined mindset.

Creativity has been the lifeblood of my approach to wedding planning — it’s the key to being resourceful and doing the most with the resources that you have. Seeing beyond traditional norms and stereotypes enabled me to assist couples in realizing their dream weddings without breaking the bank. When you have little resources to work with, it forces you to think outside the box and get creative. Cultivating creativity involves adopting a mindset that no idea is too small or too bizarre to consider. Frequently, the most groundbreaking solutions stem from the wildest ideas.

Lastly, community building. The strength and support of a community can propel an idea into a movement. Creating a platform where couples felt seen, heard, and inspired was invaluable. For those early in their careers, focus on nurturing genuine relationships within your niche and even with your customers. This means engaging with your audience beyond the surface level, understanding their needs, and providing real value. Building meaningful relationships with industry peers and mentors can also offer diverse insights and opportunities for collaboration. Building relationships has been key to the success of my business.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
For 16 years, our primary audience has been engaged couples, but with the recent launch of The Savvy Wedding Guide, our vendor directory, we now have a brand new audience of wedding professionals and small business owners. Our biggest focus right now is getting our platform in front of wedding professionals and letting them know we want to serve them! We’ve built our platform with a similar value proposition in mind for vendors as the approach we take for couples: helping them save time, money and stress — but this time, we’re serving wedding professionals. We want to give them an affordable place to market their business and reach potential couples in an efficient, savvy way.

To get in front of more vendors, we’re leveraging relationships. We’re building out referral platforms and doing more vendor-facing educational content to show them that we have savvy solutions to their marketing pain points. We look forward to a long and fruitful future of helping weddings happen the savvy way.
