Meet So Hyun Park

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful So Hyun Park a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi So Hyun, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
I struggled with imposter syndrome severely. However, I overcame it through several methods.

Firstly, it’s about remembering that hard work never betrays. As a foreigner working in an American company, it wasn’t easy. But what I realized is that I always work harder than anyone else. And that always shines through. So, especially when such issues arose, particularly when I first joined the company, I would remind myself of what I’m good at and draw strength from past experiences to persevere.

Secondly, it’s about not forgetting that there’s a reason the company chose me. I worked in multiple companies for a short period, and promotions came quickly. While it gave me pride, it also came with pressure. But what you need to remember is that the company chose you because they need you. Companies hire people who can contribute to their organization’s success. Thinking about this, ‘I was chosen by this company because they need me, and I can do my job,’ can ease your mind.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I work as a motion designer and art director. One of the most exciting aspects of my job is bringing static designs to life, making them more captivating. It feels like breathing life into the work. I absolutely love that aspect. Additionally, my work offers a broad spectrum of opportunities. I can work with major companies like Google and Apple, and also have the flexibility to collaborate with top design studios like De-Yan and BGSTR. This versatility is a significant advantage.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
After Effects is one of the programs you really need to handle well because you need to know how to make animations. Secondly, it’s having a sense of design. You need to know what is more effective and beautiful. Lastly, it’s about attitude. I think this is the most important. The field of motion requires a lot of time investment. So, you really need to have the mindset of loving this job. I believe that with this sincere passion and enthusiastic attitude, a person can excel anywhere.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
If you’re interested in collaborating with me, please feel free to reach out via email ([email protected])

I’m currently freelancing and available for various projects ranging from illustration-based motion (cell animation) to branding and promotional motion design and animation.
