Meet William J. Bruce III

We recently connected with William J. Bruce III and have shared our conversation below.

William, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
God has blessed me with opportunities to work with cool people on cool projects. I think being grateful really helps me to enjoy what it is that I am working on. And by enjoying what I am working on allows my creativity to stay alive.

“…stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive, ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive”

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I write, work in film and act as a celebrity publicist. And I often bounce back and forth between all three and also acted as an executive producer of a compilation album once (Bridge Wars).

As a publicist, I’ve worked with celebrities like Shawn Harper (NFL tackle) and the “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase (WWE Hall of Famer) . I was blessed to handle Ted during his peak in Google Trends.

In film I’ve had the pleasure of playing a gang leader (Lost Penny) and worked as a script revisionist for In the Blink of an Eye starring Eric Roberts.

I first got into writing while still a publicist by writing for various magazines, later getting interviews with models like Kylie Bisutti (Victoria Secret) and others like P.O.D frontman Sonny Sandoval before releasing my book Penholder in 2010. In 2022 I wrote the introduction to the 150th Anniversary Edition of Demons by Fyodor Dostoevsky. Currently I’ve been working on a thriller novel called “Hate” (working title). “Hate” is a dark chilling story about a promoter named Irvin who is dealing with the mysterious death of a friend. The story delves deep into his psyche as he comes to terms with what happened and tries to move on.

I’ve lived in three countries (Canada, US, and Philippines) . I am happily married to my wife who I stole from the Philippines!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
You know, dedication, honesty and gratefulness are likely the three best morals I can think of that have best impacted my journey.

I’m one who personally believes skills can be picked up easier than character, though character will take you further in life.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The Kid Stay in the Picture has been a secret weapon of mine in regards to inspiration. The book was written by Robert Evans and tells of his journey of fighting his way to the top of Paramount Pictures. Hollywood at the time had at 8 major studios, Paramount was 9th when he joined before he took the studio to number 1. Later he literally loses everything due to a few bad business deals only to rise again and get it all back! So much inspiration!
