We recently connected with Dylan Perlot and have shared our conversation below.
Dylan , thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
I feel like my way of keeping it alive is by always staying aware of all the art forms that surrounds me. I love looking at old editorial photographs from magazines and books, watching past fashion shows, listening to a certain kind of music or watching classic movies.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a Fashion Photographer and being able to do what I love everyday is truly a blessing. Waking up in the morning, knowing that your passion is your job makes life so much easier. A big part of it is meeting other creatives and working on set with people that speak the same creative language as you – this always feels like I found my community.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Confidence, persistence & passion. My advice for aspiring photographers would be to shoot as much as you can, create mood boards, put teams together and let your passion drive you. This will help you define your style, learn new techniques & make you grow as an artist overall.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Being on set can be quite stressful at times but I always remember to deal with obstacle one at a time instead of focusing on the bigger picture right away. It means work on every detail one by one, that one light that you don’t like the intensity of, that second light you don’t like the position of, the model’s pose that is not working for this outfit etc etc. Breaking it down and keeping your calm will help you achieve the result you want. At the end of the day, what we do is creating images, it’s an art and it’s important to enjoy the journey to get “the shot”.
