We were lucky to catch up with Dujuan Thomas recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dujuan, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?
Trusting in God has been my anchor throughout this journey. No matter what anyone else says, I know I’m walking in my purpose because of Him.
In life, I’ve realized that dwelling on negativity only serves to diminish one’s spirit. So I don’t even let haters have the time of day in my mind.
And you know what? Treating people with respect and kindness is a way that Ive turned haters into supporters. It shows we can all get along if we just take a moment to listen to each other.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Persistence, confidence, and faith have been the cornerstones of my journey.
Since I was young, I’ve been known for my persistence. Many of my greatest accomplishments stem from refusing to give up, from asking tough questions to showing up even when it wasn’t easy, and reaching out to the right people without waiting for permission. Confidence fueled this persistence, pushing me forward when the going got tough. And through it all, my faith in God never wavered. I trusted that what was meant for me would be for me.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
When I made the decision to run for public office, I realized that I had experienced more in 7 years than what some people might in 20 or 30 years.
I had served honorably in the Army National Guard, successfully managed my own business and various corporate roles, all while completing my bachelor’s degree simultaneously.
Yet, as I observed the field of candidates for the position of Commissioner, I noticed a gap – none of them had a legal background. Given my longstanding interest in law, I saw an opportunity to further enrich my qualifications. That’s when I embarked on pursuing my master’s degree in legal studies.
After 12 months of rigorous study, I proudly completed my degree with a focus on US Legislation from American University Washington College of Law.
