Meet Latasha Mercer

We recently connected with Latasha Mercer and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Latasha, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

I get my resilience from being a latchkey kid and big sister. Since childhood, I had to take care of myself and a younger sibling, and had a boat load of responsibility on my shoulders. I’ve always been a curious and courageous leader who loved to play and explore. I loved to push boundaries. I loved to question the status quo; and that kind of progression from a Black girl meets a lot of resistance. My resilience comes from pushing myself beyond the “no’s” and closed doors. There’s no reason why I cannot enter and exist in a space, and encourage others to think critically about the world surrounding them.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am a Los Angeles based mid-level TV Writer. It’s a profession that challenges me everyday and requests me to show up to not only deliver my best, but push my skillset beyond it. I am a constant student who is obedient to the craft.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The three qualities that impacted my journey were:

1 – Courage. Dare to take risks and do things you’ve never done before. Dare to show your work. Dare to be bad before you learn to be good.

2 – Discipline. Where are the multitude of resources you’re utilizing to increase your knowledge and skill. Do not attempt to skip the process.

3 – Discernment. Know when it’s time to go. Know when it’s time to elevate. Know when it’s time to clean up the people, places and things in your immediate environment that encourage you to remain complacent and stagnant.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

My parents gave me a ton of space to fully explore my creativity. That means living at home longer than everyone else, not making as much money, convincing them that working towards my dream will be worth not immediately jumping into a miserable dead end career just to pay bills! My parents covered me to no end, because they saw my dedication, passion and hustle for my vision, until it eventually became reality.
