We were lucky to catch up with Aderimike (Rimi) Lala recently and have shared our conversation below.
Aderimike (Rimi), so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
My confidence and self-esteem started developing when I was younger. Interestingly, I was the shy and more introverted child growing up but I knew I could do anything I set my mind to due to my upbringing. My parents brought me up to believe I could achieve anything in the world, a President of a Country, and CEO of my company, name it! This was based on the knowledge that I could rely on only Christ which was mentioned multiple times in my native language, Yoruba. I may not have fully understood it much growing up, but I’ve grown and now understand my identity in Christ and whose child I am, like my father built the world in six days so who am I not to be able to conquer the world! Another major event that shaped how I built my confidence was when I got into high school and decided to get a prize during the prize-giving day even though I had never gotten one in Primary school. So I worked hard for it and I got one; what that experience taught me is that I can do anything I set my mind to. As I improve myself, try new things, fail at things, increase my knowledge and continue learning, I’m constantly increasing my confidence and inadvertently my self-esteem. One phrase my parents told me while I was younger is to remember to not compete with others but I should only compete with myself, to improve my past self and become a better person. At the core of it, all of this is made possible because my confidence is rooted in Christ and I know I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a personal finance and lifestyle content creator and I’ve always loved topics about saving, investing, and budgeting from a very young age so I decided to start sharing about this on my social media platforms (Tiktok: wealthsavvygenz and Instagram: rimikelala). I’m that friend who’s going to ask if you’re saving or investing your money. I enjoy empowering people with the knowledge of personal finance and helping them make better financial decisions for themselves. I’m excited about my newly launched budget tracker to help kickstart your personal finance journey as well as I’m currently rebranding my website and creating a newsletter pretty soon. Outside of these, I’m a data analyst professionally and you can see the common thread, I love numbers!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The first skill is to be a lifelong learner, someone famous said the world should be your classroom and being open to learning anything is a game changer. Another quality is self-belief, I do believe I can do anything, as long as I apply myself to it and that self-belief comes from trying things, failing at them and still going until I master or figure it out. The final one is having people around you that believe in you and push you to accomplish great things.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
I’m also currently taking on 1 – 1 meetings to talk through any finance questions anyone would have or whatever financial situations they are in. So my ideal client is anyone with questions about how to manage their money properly, how to save, learning to budget, investing 101 and paying off debts.
