We recently connected with Seth Dahl and have shared our conversation below.
Seth, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I was on the verge of committing suicide after years of drug addiction and failure in every area of my life. As I had the gun in my mouth, I uttered the words, “I wish I would’ve listened to my parents, I wish I would’ve listened to my pastors, I wish I could start my life over, I wish I could just be born again.”
As the words came out of my mouth, I sensed a presence enter the room and heard loudly in my head the words, “You must be born again.”
I knew who was speaking to me from growing up in church, so I prayed my first prayer in many years. One of the things I said was, “Jesus, if you can make me born again, I’ll help kids not go down the path I went down.”
As those words left my mouth I discovered the seed for of my purpose, to help children not go down the path I went down
To make a long story short, I spent the next 14 years as a children’s pastor, and had the honor of traveling the world helping other children’s ministries. On a layover returning home I heard the voice of Jesus again say, “You’ve traveled the world helping children’s pastors, but missed the most important children’s pastors of all, the parents.” I knew from all my years leading children that without helping the parents there was only so much I do for kids, and in that moment, my purpose began growing and expanding to work more with families as a whole. To still work with children, but now at a much deeper level, their home.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am the founder of Designing God’s Dream Home Academy (as well as other academies), to equip parents to lead their homes from a genuine relationship with God by removing religiosity.
I train parents in emotional processing, from completing their own emotions from childhood, to daily processing the emotions that come up in their home life, and processing them together with their families, as well as how to renew their minds to prevent many of the uncomfortable emotions they’ve been experiencing in family life.
Along with this comes a new ability to raise their children (and function in marriage) with more love, joy, peace, patience and kindness, and self-control, all while having healthy boundaries. Creating an environment in the home that is free from fear, but full of respect.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The most important skill when it comes to parenting from a genuine relationship with God is learning to practice God’s presence in our daily lives. Refusing to parent (or do anything else) apart from an awareness of God’s direction.
The second area of knowledge would be learning what causes emotions to generate in our nervous system and what we can rearrange in our belief systems that in turn, empowers us to be much more emotionally healthy in everything we do, especially in our parenting.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
Parents who are having trouble with frustration or anger in their relationships with their kids, who would like to learn to discover and process the other emotions that are causing the anger. Parents who want to move away from attempting to control their children’s behavior but instead influence it. Parents who want to remove religiosity in their own lives and prevent it in their children, while nurturing an authentic relationship with God.
