We recently connected with LaQuintta Miller and have shared our conversation below.
LaQuintta, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Like many people I found my purpose as a Doula, while going through different situations personally in life. Motherhood was what brought me to the realization that being a Doula was what I was called to be. My first pregnancy made me love everything about motherhood and my second gave me a passion for it. I found out I was pregnant on December 24, 2019. Little did I know weeks later our entire world was going to change due to the pandemic. Not only was I faced with a lot of unknown circumstances concerning COVID and pregnancy, I was also diagnosed with preeclampsia. Throughout my pregnancy and birth I felt lost. I felt alone because I had to do most of my appointments by myself. I was isolated because I didn’t know if I got sick how it would affect me or my baby. On top of that I was still being the best mother I could to my 2 year old son. After going through everything that I went through, something I wish I would have done differently was educated myself and hired a doula to support me. I made a promise to myself that when everything calmed down I was going to become a Doula and make sure no mom ever had to feel how I felt during my pregnancy again and I did just that!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Some of my most proud names are Wife of almost 10 years, Mom of two and Doula of many! Each of these titles have helped me become who I am today and continue to help me grown to become even better. As a Child Birth Educator, Birth Doula and Postpartum Doula I support families in an unknown season of their lives. I help educate, build confidence and most importantly relieve unneeded stress. Currently I teach private Child Birth Education classes and I soon plan to expand to group classes. I am also working on completing my online Child Birth Education Class so anyone at anytime can take the class that I teach in person as well! As a Birth Doula I not only educate families on everything pregnancy, labor and birth but I am also present, I visit you multiple times before your baby arrives, equipping you for the big day! Then I attend your labor/birth and support you physically, mentally and emotionally until your baby arrives! As a Postpartum Doula I come to your home either during the day to support mom and baby in daily task or I come at night and watch baby while mom gets some much needed rest.
My ultimate goal is while I am only in your life for a short period of time is that I make a difference in your experience that will last a life time.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I would say the most impactful area of my life in my journey would be becoming a mother. It’s one thing to be educated on something and teach others about it but I’ve actually been through what I’m teaching. I’ve been pregnant twice, had a low risk pregnancy and a high risk one. Had a great postpartum experience and dealt with postpartum depression. Labored for 12 hours with both! I get it on a different level and because of that I’m able to connect with my clients on a different level. If I could give any advice to new doulas out there it would be to not do it unless you have a true passion for it. From the outside looking in, it looks very easy but I’ll be the first to tell you it’s not. You give your all to these families and they deserve the best.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal client is a honest one. A client that tells me exactly how she is feeling, what she needs from me and how we can reach these goals together, Vulnerability is big in birth work on both ends. I never judge my clients, I make sure they feel heard and I try my best to make sure I am there for them when they need me.
