Meet TaQuisha Brown

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful TaQuisha Brown. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with TaQuisha below.

Hi TaQuisha , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I have always had an interest in hair since I was a young girl. My mother is a cosmetologist and she has been doing hair since she was 12. I grew up thinking I could be creative but I wasn’t really sure what to be creative about because I can’t draw, but I knew that my mind and hands were talented. I also knew that the way I think was different than others. I looked as myself as a leader and a good communicator, which lead me to go into business. I had my children and I wanted to support them. At the time I figured that going to school for the business would be the better option for me. After attending college and graduating with my business degree I realized that this is not the route I wanted to go career wise. So right after graduating I went to cosmetology school. I found my happy place. I love making people happy and transforming hair which is where I realized my creativity was developed. I found my purpose in hair. I made a career out of something that I truly love and enjoy.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is TaQuisha Brown, I am a mother of four and I am a natural hairstylist and entrepreneur. I am a hairstylist that specializes in all things natural and braids. I service men, women, and children. I feel that what I specialize in is exciting because I am able to service people with all texture hair. Also hair at all length and I am able to recreate and transition the hair to any state that I would want the hair to be in. I am a creator. I am not artistic in the sense of paints and drawing but what I can visualize in my head as a hairstyle I am able to reform and create that as a hairstyle. I love the thrill and also the excitement that my clients receive from when they walk in the door until the walk out. It makes me happy to know that I am making someone feel confident about themselves. As a stylist we know that one of the first things people will see on you is your hair and your crown should always be held high.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on my journey the skills that I have learned overtime is to be patient. Patience is key to all things hair, from the finest of hair to the kinkiest of curls. I have also learned that using the proper combs and brushes mean so much for the hair. There are wide tooth combs down to the rat tail comb and each should be used accordingly to the penetrate the hair. As far as your hot tools make sure you require the best for your clients. The hot tools (hot combs, blow dryers, etc) comes in different watts and knowing that the highest of heat is not needed in everyone hair the same is great studying of one’s hair.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Being a stylist can be very overwhelming at times. Yes, as stylist we love what we do but the standing on your feet for hours can cause pain. Also as a stylist you are available to people all the time. Your life is revolving around others time frame. I would like to give the advice in taking personal days. Sometimes put your phone down and have mental breaks. Self care is very important because believe it or not you are the self care person to clients. Plan your off days ahead of time and don’t feel guilty about taking breaks. When deciding off days plan at least one full day to rest and stay off of your feet, your body will thank you later.
