We were lucky to catch up with Shalisa Shaw recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shalisa , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I get my work ethic from my environment that I am surrounded by and have been surrounded by for the last 28 years of my life. I grew up with a hard working family. My mother worked in insurance. My father worked as an auditor and drove very far distances to provide for his family until the age of 70.
My parents also retired at a very late age and so I constantly saw this principle of “you gotta do what you Gotta do” to make it and keep a roof over your head especially when you have so many dependents (kids), relying on you in this life, and so being able to see their work ethic Somewhat created a guideline of how I will need to move when I’m older to be able to provide for myself to buy myself a home and you take care of myself without depending on my parents.
They pushed me to start working around the age of I would say 15. my first job was with the paper route, I had over 100 houses that I had to drop papers off to, which was more than the average paper route. I was okay with it because more houses meant more money my fellow paper, girls, and paper boys know that the process of putting a newspaper out together is not for the week. It is extremely detail oriented and involves a lot of organization and conciseness just to draw a picture for you. The first step is to usually organize and separate the papers seven different flyers and merge them together for over in my case 100 houses I’m assuming we could only imagine how time consuming that to be .
Anyways, shoutout to my dad for constantly helping me organize the papers and even joining me on my paper route. He always carried this attitude of get it done and get it out the way and that work ethic has always helped my state of mind, when I don’t wanna go in for a shift or I’m too tired or I don’t like a job anymore – he’s always super positive and encourages me to keep going and that the universe/God or whatever you believe in will always guide you to the next steps in this life.
Building that kind of work ethic from a young age helps to build habits and patterns that will benefit you in the future.
I also have two beautiful siblings who again are hustlers in their own right. my sister works in social work and my brother works in production and because I’m the youngest child I was able to see many examples/ways of “chasing your dreams” and making it happen in real life.
So because of my environment, a.k.a. my family, I think that is where my work ethic comes from. We are not to lazy group of people, we really do believe in statement “if you want something you have to work for it” and as a result you will get to enjoy and reap the benefits of your hard work.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am in aspiring music executive who grew up in a household with all musical Wiens. My dad would play Anita Baker, Stevie Wonder, Patti LaBelle, Buju, Banton, and so many more legendary artists in the house every Saturday. My father would also make sure that on Sundays we woke up to Sunday Best on BET playing very loud.
I had a sister who burnt CDs with over 35 songs using the legendary Limewire every single weekend… I was naturally bombarded with Music on a daily basis
I also had a brother who is a rapper at the time, so I was always witness to his song radian, his recording sessions, and his music video/releases.
You would’ve thought I would’ve went to school for music business but instead, I went on to study criminology at Carleton university in Ottawa. Two years into my studies I realize that (Law) was just not for me and I decided to move back to Toronto to study communications and digital media at the University of Institute of technology (now known as Ontario tech university),
I am a true believer that God doesn’t place desires and dreams in your heart and in your mind for no reason. So I decided to explore my passion for music and find an an internship where I could exercise my passion and find out what role in specific suited me best.
I came across an internship at Dream More touring in event, where I was the administrative assistant in charge of the recording studio. They owned by Job, was to book artist back in after their session, and because I became so good at creating revenue for the company they decided to move me onto being the tour manager for their annual music tour.
This tour spanned across four states in America, New York, Atlanta, Washington DC in Miami . Followed by our final show in Toronto. My job as a tour manager was to scout artists within each state and pitch the tours value to them. With the goal of getting them to financially invest in their spot on the tour. I ended up booking 5 artists per state and 12 artists within toronto.
The second part of my job was to find venues that made sense and aligned with her budget, hire our technical team, handle hotel, accommodations, flights, and ground transportation for a team of 10.
After successfully completing the store, I realized that this was the career for me.
I went on to intern for artists managers and artists, to learn as much about the music industry as I possibly could.
Then Cove it happened and all things were put on pause. I was wondering what I was going to do to continue practising my skill set and so I started this radio show called SMR VIBES: was a Audio podcast that featured upcoming artists songs within the beginning of each show. A lot of people caught on to the show and started asking me to feature their songs in the beginning of my shows and so this led me down this journey to build a studio in my basement to shoot a visual podcast called Shalisa Marie Radio featuring three of my girlfriends and also use that studio to shoot a digital music series called in In Concert Canada.
Shalisa Marie Radio was a podcast featuring for girlfriend speaking about self love, relationships, friendships, spirituality, and all the topics that people in their 20s are constantly trying to figure out.
In concert Canada was a nine episode Digital music series featuring upcoming artist within Toronto. I noticed that artists within our city didn’t really have a Music series to go to to enhance their digital branding or to push their new songs… our featured artists got to use their episodes to apply to music contests, shows, and to book radio interviews!
It ended up being a success for both entities, and I have built an audience that has stuck with me for the last four years.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
You have to have a vision without a vision you can’t build or work towards anything.
Stay consistent, without consistency my platform wouldn’t have been noticed by the people who support me till this day.
Stay true to who you are don’t change your content just because people are asking you to … make sure the change you’re about to make aligns with you and your values.
Just know that again God doesn’t give you a dream for nothing. He planted that within you so you could follow it like a guide.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
I would say that the most impactful thing that my parents have done for me this far was allow me to build my studio in my basement to record Shalisa Marie radio along with in concert Canada without their greenlight. I would have to pay a lot of money to other studio spaces to get the job done and based on the amount of content that I was producing …….. that would’ve costed me a lot of money.
I think that my parents allowing me to express and execute my ideas in their basement allowed me to save a lot of money, a lot of time, a lot of resources and allowed me to really cultivate my skill set in one space without the financial burden.
