We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Maxwell Simpson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Maxwell below.
Maxwell , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
My parents instilled in myself and my siblings the value of hard work. My dad says often “if it don’t come hard…. It won’t stay with you”.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Our business model is really simple.
We pay to promote our events on all the social media sites.
All of our media followers are honest, We haven’t “bought” any of them. There are entities that have basically paid or otherwise enticed likes and follows. I am not saying that is wrong. I’m saying I want an actual count of real people who have intentionally seen or experienced our product and thought enough of it to follow our band.
Our traction is hard-earned by being professional, prompt, and over delivering our service. We tend to play over the allotted time a little, take fewer breaks, etc.
We give venues their money’s worth and strive to bring visitors that will have otherwise not have been there. Paying customers have an economic impact for the venue. Venues recognize that and that results in future bookings for us.
Private events are almost always coming from people who have seen us live.
As far as advancing our art, we are always on the grind with new material and working on our show. We want our followers to never see the same show twice.
The music business is tough but we love it. Inspiration and perspiration.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1) Exposure from a young age to a LOT of music.
2) percussion and guitar came pretty natural to me but you have to grind to hone any natural talent.
3) a lot of “hustle” is involved in birthing a band – staffing, creating the style, booking engagements, marketing, bookkeeping, to name a few.
Note: 2 and 3 above really go back to the hard work value in the first question.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
Finally having a permanent lineup with band staff that are “bought in” and don’t just see it as a hobby.
