We were lucky to catch up with Shauna Jessop recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shauna , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I’ve come to understand that resilience is simply waking up each day and choosing to keep pursuing your dream. I often refer to the advice an old millionaire friend gave me. I asked him what he thought the key was to his success. He said, “Success is simply your willingness to keep solving problems and overcoming obstacles as they arise.” That one bit of advice has been what I have leaned on over the last 4 years of developing my product and starting my own business. Navigating the ups and downs of life, balancing motherhood, maintaining a livelihood, while bringing an idea from thought to fruition has been a challenging, but rewarding process. And although I was blessed to experience “overnight success” with my business launch, the years leading up to that were filled with failures, setbacks, and doubt. Had I given up at any point along the way, I wouldn’t be living my entrepreneurial dream today. And while I have a wonderful support system around me to give credit to, I also thank my past self for believing just enough to keep taking one more step forward.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself? and your business?
I’m the product inventor and owner of Soigné Studios Co, where we sell my patented product called towelcharms. Towelcharms are a combination of a spring clip on the back and a plastic decorative face that tightly holds your towels to an appliance handle or towel ring. We’re on a mission to keep hand towels off the floor while adding some charm and style to your kitchen and bath. We offer a wide variety of designs so that our customers can find something that will fit their unique style preferences. So whether you prefer simple and classic, or more novelty fun, there’s something for everyone. Most of our sales are direct to consumer through our website, but we’re excited to soon be offering wholesale options as well for boutiques and retail.
This will be a big year for Soigné Studios Co. and I’m so excited for all that’s in the works!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Don’t accept no for an answer, never stop cultivating your creativity, and keep taking action everyday, however small. I believe those three habits combined will make you an unstoppable force as an entrepreneur.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
My confidence is where I feel I’ve grown the most. I am deeply introverted, and a people-pleaser by nature so exposing myself on social media was something I was afraid of for a very long time. I knew social media was the platform I needed to introduce a new product to the market; it was where I could educate the people and find my customers. So I began with a 23 day prelaunch where I personally challenged myself to show up everyday and share something about me or my business. And it paid off, because launch day arrived, and we sold out in just a few hours with over 2000 orders. Looking back today, just 6 months ago I was learning how Instagram works and today I have a very successful business with amazing potential, and we are expanding on every level.
Stepping outside the safe zone and fully embracing the social media experience, and all the discomforts and anxieties that entails, is what finally allowed me to break free from those insecurities. Not only am I no longer afraid to be seen and heard, but I’m ready to make a splash big enough for people to see what I’m up to.
