We were lucky to catch up with Nazli Brush recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nazli, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
For this question I have a book recommendation. In “The Most Powerful Woman in the Room Is You,” Lydia Fenet offers insightful guidance on how to navigate situations where you might find yourself as the only one in the room who looks like you. Here’s how you can apply principles from the book to be effective and successful in such scenarios:
Fenet emphasizes the importance of embracing your uniqueness and using it to your advantage. Rather than feeling self-conscious about being different, recognize that your diverse perspective brings value to the table. Use this confidence to assert yourself and contribute meaningfully to discussions and decisions. Take control of how you present yourself to others. By owning your story and confidently sharing it with others, you can shape how you’re perceived in professional settings, regardless of whether you’re the only one who looks like you.
As the only one in the room who looks like you, you may sometimes face doubts or skepticism from others. By demonstrating confidence in your abilities and ideas, you can command respect and influence outcomes in any setting. Difficult situations may arise where you feel misunderstood or marginalized. Stay true to your values, communicate effectively, and address any biases or misconceptions with confidence and professionalism.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As an artist, I specialize in acrylic paintings and digital illustrations. My passion for travel takes me and my partner around the world for half of the year, where we gather stories, memories, and patterns that inspire my art. Each of my artworks carries a unique narrative, reflecting the experiences and emotions behind it.
Bold and vibrant colors are a hallmark of my work, reflecting my love for hues that evoke energy and vitality. While my original pieces are available on my website, AtelierNazliBrush.com, I also operate an Etsy shop offering paper goods such as art prints, greeting cards, and stickers.
In addition to these platforms, I’m actively expanding into the wholesale business, seeking partnerships with other stores to broaden my reach and establish deeper connections with art lovers worldwide. My goal is to share my passion for art and storytelling with as many people as possible, enriching lives through creativity and imagination.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The willingness and ability to adapt to changing circumstances have been essential in navigating a dynamic and ever-evolving environment. Adaptability involves being open to new ideas, embracing change, and staying flexible in your approach. Early-stage individuals can enhance their adaptability by exposing themselves to diverse experiences, continuously learning and acquiring new skills, and seeking out opportunities to step outside their comfort zones.
Building strong relationships and networks has played a significant role in my journey, opening doors to opportunities, support, and collaboration. Effective networking involves genuine connection, mutual respect, and a willingness to give as well as receive support. To develop networking skills, early-stage individuals can attend industry events, join professional organizations, and engage with peers and mentors both online and offline. Building meaningful relationships takes time and effort but can be incredibly rewarding in the long run.
My advice for individuals early in their journey is to focus on developing these qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge while staying true to their passions and values. Embrace challenges as learning opportunities, stay adaptable and open-minded, and prioritize building genuine connections with others in your field. Remember that success is often a journey filled with ups and downs, and resilience, adaptability, and strong relationships can help you navigate the path toward your goals with confidence and grace.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Collaboration can be such a rewarding experience, especially when it involves blending creative energies with others who share your passion for colorful artwork inspired by travel.
I’d love to collaborate with a ceramic artist to create unique pieces! They would handle the ceramic design, while I add my artwork on top. Currently, I’m painting on bisque plates, and it’s incredibly enjoyable. Please reach out to me via the email provided on my website to discuss this further. Looking forward to connecting and exploring this collaboration!
