Meet Lisane Basquiat

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lisane Basquiat. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lisane below.

Lisane, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

My resilience stems from an innate understanding that my personal state is the centerpoint for how I meet the challenges and experiences that I encounter. To put it simply, I am most resilient when I am committed to my self-care and weakest when I am not taking care of myself. Self-care, in this context, looks like flexibility, taking full accountability for my world, having a positive outlook, and viewing life’s challenges through a solution focused lens. Having healthy relationships, clarity on my values and boundaries, and allowing myself time and space for processing are all part of my recipe for strength and centeredness in the face of adversity and challenges.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am the Brooklyn born middle daughter of a Haitian immigrant and Puerto Rican mother. I am also an advocate for supporting human beings in remembering who they are, why they are here, and discovering what they can accomplish externally when they commit to a healthy relationship with themselves.

In 2008, I made the transition from corporate executive to entrepreneurship. While scary at first, it has been an amazing journey of creativity, hard work, and growth. I believe that our lives shine when we clean up the relationship that we’re in with ourselves. My mission and purpose is to advocate for familial empowerment through personal growth, truth-telling, and spiritual alignment; leading to stronger familial dynamics and legacy.

I am the mother to two amazing adult humans, “Wuela” to two grandchildren, and have been bi-coastal, living in both Southern California and the NY area since 2012.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The three qualities that have been most impactful on my journey are a strong work ethic, being solution oriented (I always look for ways to resolve problems), and a willingness to take full accountability for the circumstances in my world.

Of these, my advice is two-fold:

1. Take full and total accountability for what is happening in your life. You have but one and it is so important that you put yourself into the driver’s seat of your circumstances. Be clear about your values, set boundaries, have the tough conversations, confront what requires resolution within yourself.

2. Commit to having an incredible relationship with yourself, including radical focus on your self-care.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

My biological family has been an integral part of helping me to shape my foundation. From them, I’ve gained essential life skills, a strong work ethic and a baseline from which to choose what I wanted to bring forward, and what I needed to leave behind.

Today, I have a strong fam-munity of friends and family from diverse backgrounds and experiences that I lean on for support, encouragement, and lots of laughter.
