We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Steve Schuyler a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Steve , so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
When I launched JavaTwist which combines fruit juice and coffee everyone thought I was crazy. Not only is the beverage space very crowded but the drink is so unique and different than anything on the market. My passion for coffee and crafting unique beverages which I cultivated with my 20+ years as a barista drove me to launch my own coffee brand. Being unique is beautiful. I don’t want to make drinks like everyone else. This uniqueness may not draw the masses initially but eventually everyone is drawn towards excellence. If I am excellent at crafting unique beverages that provide incredible value in flavor to my customer then eventually success will follow.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am the founder of JavaTwist LLC which is a refreshingly cool twist on coffee and fruit juice. We started with cold brewed coffee and lemonade. This beverage launched the brand now we offer 9 different beverages including: 5 normal coffee with fruit, 2 with zero added sugar, and 2 non-coffee alternatives. All of our products are completely unique in the beverage space. We have won over 14 awards for our various products. We sell retail, wholesale, and special events. We also have a website to ship directly to the consumer at www.java-twist.com. In addition we just recently opened our own bottling facility at 2331 Silvernail Rd. Pewaukee, WI 53072
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Don’t Be Afraid– Life is so short and too many people are afraid of failure and never take the risk. I have taken the path less traveled and it has made all the difference.
2. Do What you Love– Find what you love to do and would do it for free. If you find this and excel at it you will never work or have stress a day in your life and feel very enriched.
3. Learn to find joy in the journey– Life is a journey. Enjoy every step that you are taking and have fun.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
We would love to partner with great companies that want to carry unique products for their customers. As far as collaboration if you would like we can private label a very unique product for you or create a beverage just for you.
