Meet Erica Bowles-Day

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Erica Bowles-Day. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Erica below.

Hi Erica , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

Sometimes, purpose follows pain, kind of like sunshine after rain.
In my 19 years of motherhood, there have been moments of the deepest joy, and moments of grief that took me to my knees. Each of those experiences; which range from being a single teenage mother, secondary infertility, and postpartum depression, to marrying a man who loved my firstborn son as his own, finally getting pregnant again, becoming a doula, and founding the Mommy Mentor Club; gave me a deeper understanding, conviction, and clarity of what my passion and purpose is. My first and second motherhood experience were polar opposites, each beneficial for me and my ability to relate to moms in many different seasons of life.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

My expertise is mothers. I am a certified doula offering private birth education, placenta encapsulation, and birth support. I hold fitness training certifications for general group fitness and Antenatal Fitness which allows me to meet mothers right where they’re at on their wellness journey, and guide them to where they want to go. I also do private mentorship for moms inside my program The Mommy Mentor Club. The mentorship focuses on 4 pillars of intentionality that create momentum and sustainable energy for life, so moms can enjoy who they are not just as mothers, but as human beings with unique interests and abilities without feeling guilty! I am so excited to be offering in-person services beginning June 2024 in Southern California!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Picking just 3 is tough! I would say the quality that served me the most, which by default allowed me to better serve my clients, was my willingness to show up as a beginner and learn! Sometimes us folks with high achieving personalities find it difficult to show lack of expertise, but letting yourself just begin is the greatest gift. Leave your ego at the door and remember who it’s really about! It is not about ME, it is about allowing myself to learn as much as possible so I can show up and serve with excellence all those who need what I have to offer.
After getting started, I became really good at asking questions and actually listening to the answers my prospective and current clients were sharing. Listening to understand and serve is very different than listening to formulate a perfect response. People want to feel understood, and learning to listen well will set you apart from those whose only goal is to “close” a deal.
Lastly, diving in and investing in education has allowed me to better serve moms across the board! For example, birth work is not a regulated profession. Anyone can just wake up tomorrow and call themselves a Doula. But I chose to complete two extensive programs and get professionally educated and certified. I take continuing education courses for mentoring and coaching.
I would highly recommend to anyone looking to step into the lives and journey’s of another human being as a mentor or coach to really give those humans what they deserve, which is showing up with excellence.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

Feeling overwhelmed is a common occurrence in motherhood, and I am not exempt from those feelings just because I am a mentor. When I find myself feeling overwhelmed, I practice my momentum method, which I teach clients inside my mentorship program. At a high level, it allows me to pause, figure out which of the pillars of intentionality I am struggling with, and identify simple solutions for integrating what I need back into my routine. Sometimes I will start to feel overwhelmed, and after just a few moments of practicing this method, I quickly realize that the solution is simple. Sometimes, I realize the solution is hard. the method begins with a brain dump, and this is the first step I would encourage you to do if you are feeling overwhelmed. Get a pen and paper and let your brain spill out onto paper. What you write doesn’t have to make sense to anyone but you. By taking this small but powerful action, you are freeing up space in your mind and heart to problem solve and get a birds eye view of things you may not have realized were on your mind. Start there, it makes a big difference in overcoming overwhelm.
