Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kamilah Mitchell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kamilah , so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
Being my authentic self and being transparent of my values as a black woman and the value of what I bring to the table, has allowed me to be impactful in spaces that I belong in. Before entering spaces where I am the only one in the room that looks like me, I definitely ask the why of those bringing me in the room to ensure I am not compromising self or values, and use discernment when it is time for me to leave the room.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am the owner founder and tea lady of Teas With Meaning. I started TWM in 2018 following a 2017 cancer diagnosis, in which I chose to find alternative ways to deal with and fight my cancer. Teas With Meaning was founded on 3 core values; to provide organic loose leaf blends with various wellness benefits without compromising taste, to provide authentic tea experiences through intentional conversations and community building with tea time, and to promote self care routines. I also have the honor to have worked in several school systems and juvenile detention centers nationwide for over 20 years, as my passion really lies with the underrepresented youth that look like me. Grateful for the growth and sustainability of TWM over the years.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Gratitude, authenticity, and integrity have been three qualities that supported this faith journey. I had no business knowledge when starting TWM but knew how the american healthcare system handled me with my cancer journey and knew I wanted a holistic approach to my whole self healing. I always encourage others to stay true to themselves and their values.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
Challenge as a business owner I never expected when starting 6 years ago was algorithms and every day changes of social media for marketing purposes, and how 2020 brought a “buy black trend” where we seen many folks supporting black businesses but the trend to fade drastically alongside inflation. Teas With Meaning has not changed our prices from day one, so trying to creating experiences and bundles that will support the inflation and new customer acquisition has been one thing we are trying, out of many things. Social media….I’m still learning.
