Meet Mishka Tedesco

We recently connected with Mishka Tedesco and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Mishka, really appreciate you opening up about a very personal topic with the hopes that it can help someone out there who might be going through it. What can you share with us about your journey with postpartum depression and how you overcame PPD? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.

Overcoming postpartum depression was a journey for me, one that led me to find solace and support through a postpartum doula. Recognizing the profound impact of this experience, I became one myself. Our society often overlooks the importance of comprehensive postnatal care, but it’s truly vital for our collective well-being. It’s about nurturing yourself and your baby, fostering healing, and embracing the joys of parenthood. With the help of a postpartum doula, I discovered the transformative power of emotional support, practical assistance, and invaluable resources during this delicate time. Their presence eased my worries, provided guidance, and empowered me to navigate the complexities of postpartum depression. Together, we created a nurturing environment, free of judgment, where healing and growth flourished.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

As a postpartum doula, my mission is to provide comprehensive support that addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of new parents and their babies. What truly excites me about my work is the opportunity to infuse care with personalized rituals and practices, such as tarot readings, astrology insights, plant medicine guidance, and more.

Physically, I offer practical assistance with breastfeeding, newborn care, meal preparation, and household tasks, aiming to ease the daily burdens and allow families to focus on bonding and recovery. Emotionally, I provide a nurturing space for parents to express their feelings and fears, fostering a sense of validation and empowerment as they navigate the joys and challenges of early parenthood.

Spiritually, I honor the unique beliefs and values of each family, incorporating rituals and traditions that resonate with their spiritual journey. Whether it’s drawing tarot cards for guidance, exploring astrology insights for self-awareness, or incorporating plant medicine rituals for healing, I aim to deepen the spiritual connection between parents and their newborn. This personalized approach allows families to create meaningful memories and strengthen their bond during this transformative time. In exciting news, I’m expanding my services to include virtual doula support, ensuring that families everywhere have access to compassionate care tailored to their individual needs. Additionally, I’ll be offering postpartum wellness workshops, where parents can learn practical tools for self-care and emotional resilience. I’m committed to evolving my practice to better serve the diverse needs of new parents and their babies.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, three qualities that were crucial in my journey as a postpartum doula were compassion, flexibility, and continuous learning. My advice for those starting out is to prioritize empathy, adaptability, and ongoing education. These qualities will help you provide effective support and adapt to the diverse needs of the families you support.

I think it’s also important to bring your own individuality and strengths into your practice as a postpartum doula. Your unique qualities and experiences can enrich the support you provide, allowing you to connect with families in meaningful ways and offer personalized care that resonates with them. Embrace your strengths and integrate them into your practice to create a truly impactful and fulfilling experience for both you and the families you serve.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

I am incredibly grateful for the unwavering support and guidance I received from my midwife and postpartum doula throughout my pregnancy journey. Their expertise, compassion, and dedication played a pivotal role in helping me overcome challenges and develop the essential skills and knowledge needed for success. Their personalized care and reassurance provided me with the confidence and strength to navigate the ups and downs of pregnancy and early parenthood with grace and resilience.

Additionally, the support of my family and clients has been invaluable in shaping my journey. Their encouragement, understanding, and trust have motivated me to continuously strive for excellence in my practice. Each interaction and experience has been a source of growth and inspiration, reinforcing my commitment to serving others with empathy, compassion, and unwavering support.

I am deeply thankful for the collective impact of these individuals in shaping my path as a caregiver and empowering me to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
