We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Krish Nihalani. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Krish below.
Hi Krish, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Developing confidence and self-esteem as a photographer—or in any field—is an ongoing journey, often shaped by experiences, introspection, and a willingness to learn and grow. Here’s a deeper dive into how those elements contribute:
Embracing Success and Failure: Recognizing that success and failure are two sides of the same coin is crucial. Celebrating my successes is important—it validates my hard work and talent. But equally important is accepting my failures. Failure is not a setback; it’s an opportunity to learn and improve. By embracing both success and failure, I take ownership of my journey and use each experience to propel myself forward.
Learning from Mistakes: Every mistake offers me a chance to learn and refine my craft. As a photographer, I’m constantly experimenting with light, composition, and subject matter. Some shots will miss the mark, but each misstep provides valuable lessons that contribute to my growth. By acknowledging my mistakes without dwelling on them, I cultivate resilience and adaptability.
Self-Acceptance: True confidence stems from self-acceptance—acknowledging my strengths and weaknesses without judgment. Understanding that nobody is perfect allows me to embrace my unique style and approach as a photographer. It’s about owning my identity and trusting my instincts, even in the face of criticism or doubt.
Setting Realistic Goals: Setting achievable goals is instrumental in building confidence. I break down larger aspirations into smaller, manageable tasks, and celebrate each milestone along the way. By setting realistic expectations for myself, I build momentum and cultivate a sense of accomplishment that fuels further growth.
Seeking Feedback and Support: Surrounding myself with mentors, peers, and a supportive community is invaluable. Constructive feedback helps me refine my skills and develop a deeper understanding of my craft. Additionally, having a network of fellow photographers who understand the challenges and triumphs of the profession provides encouragement and perspective.
Continual Growth and Adaptation: The photography industry is constantly evolving, and successful photographers embrace change rather than resist it. Whether it’s mastering new techniques, embracing emerging technologies, or exploring different genres, staying curious and adaptable is key to sustained success.
Celebrating Progress: Finally, I remember to celebrate my progress. Each step forward, no matter how small, is a testament to my dedication and passion for photography. By acknowledging my achievements, I reinforce positive behavior and reinforce my belief in myself.
In essence, developing confidence and self-esteem as a photographer—and in life—is a journey of self-discovery, resilience, and continual growth. By embracing both the successes and setbacks, learning from each experience, and surrounding myself with support, I can cultivate the confidence to pursue my creative vision fearlessly.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
As a photographer, my focus is on capturing the beauty and essence of moments, whether it’s through landscapes, portraits, or events. What excites me most about my work is the opportunity to convey emotions, stories, and perspectives through imagery.
What sets my approach apart is my commitment to authenticity and connection. I strive to create images that look beautiful and resonate deeply with viewers, evoking a sense of wonder, joy, or introspection. Whether photographing a majestic landscape, a candid portrait, or an apparel campaign, I aim to capture the essence of the moment in a captivating and genuine way.
In addition to my passion for photography, I also prioritize community engagement and collaboration. Art has the power to bring people together, spark meaningful conversations, and inspire positive change. That’s why I’m always seeking opportunities to collaborate with fellow artists, organizations, and community members to create impactful projects and events.
As for what’s new, I’m excited to announce that I have graduated from the New York Film Academy, Los Angeles with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography Degree. I am on the road to working with other professionals in the field of photography and film.
I’m also in the process of expanding my online presence, with plans to update my website (www.krishnihalani.com) showcasing some of my latest projects, ‘To Be Seen’ and other commercial work.
Overall, I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to pursue my passion for photography and to share my vision with others. I’m constantly inspired by the beauty of the world around me, and I’m dedicated to capturing moments that remind us of the magic and wonder that surrounds us every day. Thank you for joining me on this journey, and I look forward to sharing more of my work with you in the future!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my journey, three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge stand out as particularly impactful:
1. Resilience: In a creative field like photography, setbacks and challenges are inevitable. Developing resilience—to bounce back from failures, rejection, or unexpected obstacles—has been crucial in navigating the highs and lows of my journey. To cultivate resilience, I encourage early-stage photographers to embrace failure as a natural part of the learning process. Instead of viewing setbacks as roadblocks, see them as opportunities for growth and improvement. Surround yourself with a supportive community, seek feedback, and keep pushing forward, even when things get tough.
2. Creativity: Photography is inherently a creative endeavor, and nurturing creativity is essential for producing compelling and unique work. To enhance creativity, I advise beginners to explore different genres, experiment with various techniques, and push beyond their comfort zones. Keep an open mind, stay curious, and draw inspiration from diverse sources—whether it’s nature, art, literature, or everyday life. Practice mindfulness and cultivate a mindset of playfulness and experimentation. Remember that creativity is not a finite resource; it’s a muscle that strengthens with practice and exploration.
3. Continuous Learning: The field of photography is constantly evolving, with new technologies, trends, and techniques emerging all the time. Embracing a mindset of continuous learning and growth is essential for staying relevant and pushing the boundaries of your craft. Invest in your education by taking workshops, and courses, and attending photography seminars. Seek out mentors and fellow photographers who can offer guidance, feedback, and inspiration. Stay curious and humble, recognizing that there’s always more to learn and explore. And don’t be afraid to push yourself beyond your comfort zone, as it’s often where the most significant growth occurs.
A brief conclusion- resilience, creativity, and continuous learning have been foundational to my journey as a photographer. For those early in their journey, my advice is to embrace failure as a stepping stone to success, nurture your creativity through exploration and experimentation, and prioritize ongoing learning and growth. Stay curious, stay resilient, and above all, stay true to your unique vision and voice as an artist.
