We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kaitlin Murphy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kaitlin , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Growing up, I thought I knew what I wanted to do, I wanted to become a police officer like my dad and grandpa and continue the family “legacy”. I continued to work toward that goal until I had my daughter, and had a change of heart because I wanted to stay home with her. I stayed home and became a stay at home mom of 3 littles. I was content as a stay at home mom, but as they grew older and went to school I struggled to find my purpose while still being a very involved mom like I was used to. I went to EMT school, got my license and started applying for jobs, that’s when covid hit and having to home school my children while my husband was also a first responder still had to work , I chose to stop trying to get into the first responder field and picked up a hobby of Spray tanning. I took the courses and fell in love learning about how the skin worked and started my journey into the beauty industry. 2 years later we packed up and moved to Arizona and I really dug into building a beauty business. I went to school to become an esthetician, I found during school facials and waxing were what makes my heart happy. This field has given me the best of both worlds and allowed me to grow my business, be successful while being able to set my own schedule and not miss anything and still be such an active mom for my kids!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Opening Bronzed Babe Esthetics a year ago I didn’t know how successful a spray tanning business would be in the Sunniest Place in the US, but I have built a brand of perfecting natural looking spray tans and introducing people here in Yuma, AZ to mobile tanning where I come into their homes and spray them so they can easily achieve the perfect tan. Building onto my spray tan brand I became an esthetician and love introducing people to full body treatments and full body waxing. Acne and skin problems aren’t just on your face but can occur over the entire body and treating them has been my specialty over the last year. I also have become a mens skin care specialist as well as adding education and searching non stop for the best products, treatments and ingrown hair products on the market to help my clients achieve the best skin no matter what part of the body.
My ultimate goal in my business is to create a fun comfortable space for anyone and everyone to come in and feel their best about any part of their body.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
My advice to people starting this journey would be not to be afraid of failure. Be smart, financially, do your research but don’t be afraid to fail, failure is just a lesson on what not to do and you can learn what to do different moving forward. I am a big goal setter and a planner. Before I do anything big I like to have my next 5 steps ahead planned out before I even start and once I achieve those I reset and plan out my next 5 steps. Life is too short to not enjoy the ride, pick your self up to keep on moving forward toward your goals. Be outgoing and continue to move outside your comfort zone because that is where growth is!
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
My favorite book to date is “How to be a Boss B*tch” by Christine Quinn. This book really opened my eyes that I don’t need to be a cookie cutter esthetician. I am a business woman, I get to decide how I dress, how I look, what I want to specialize in. That being me is what is going to attract clients not pretending to be like someone else. Also it goes on about how to really hustle and I personally needed that guidance! Just keep pushing and showing up for yourself!
