We were lucky to catch up with Laura Heikkila recently and have shared our conversation below.
Laura, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I owned a large insurance agency for over 25 years. It was stressful, and I didn’t enjoy it. My father developed Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, and because I lived so far away, I decided to sell my business and move closer to my parents to help. After moving back to California, I decided to get my personal trainer and nutrition certification because I love fitness and health. I began to train women on a part-time basis. Then, at the age of 48, I started to struggle with hormonal issues and shifts in my body composition due to perimenopause. I struggled to find the help I needed, so I decided to dive deep into researching how women in midlife are impacted during this phase of life. I took everything I learned and changed my lifestyle, nutrition, and fitness. I started posting my results on Instagram, and my following grew quickly. Soon, women were reaching out to me, asking for help.
I continued my education by studying for my Holistic Health Practitioner certification. I then started taking on midlife women as clients and coaching them through their midlife transition with weight gain, hormonal changes, and more.
My frustration with understanding this phase of life led me to want to help every woman navigate this journey more smoothly. Since I started, I have helped over a thousand women worldwide regain control of their health and bodies.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I created the Ageless Women Society about six years ago as a community for midlife women to support each other through this phase of life. Through this community, I have been able to educate women on the impact of hormones during perimenopause and menopause and help support them with the guidance they need to thrive during midlife. We focus on health, managing stress, nutrition, sleep, strength training, hormone optimization, and understanding options for hormone replacement therapy.
Women worldwide have been completing my Ageless Fit 8-Week Transformation program with amazing results. I pride myself in the fact that I have helped thousands of women who have tried everything else out there with no success.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Determination, Consistency, and Compassion.
You must be determined to reach your goals, or the first time life throws you a curve ball, you’ll fail to stay the course. Without consistency in small daily habits, you’ll also fail to reach your goals. It’s consistency over time that reaps the rewards.
Having compassion for other women is what has made me a great coach. It’s not just about a paycheck, it’s about making a change to how women view aging and their health.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
With the current popularity of drugs such as ozempic, I would love to collaborate with practitioners that provide these types of prescriptions for weight loss and help teach their clients how to transition off these drugs, when it is time, having created new healthy lifestyle changes so they can maintain the results they have achieved. Too many times, women are stuck on this rollercoaster of dieting and gaining the weight back. I teach women how never to have to diet again.
