We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Wendy Jones a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Wendy, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I realized that I have been drawn to stories of human resilience my entire life. As a kid, I would read books about athletes challenging their limits and accomplishing amazing feats and people recovering from terrible accidents or health battles. At the root of that was my curiosity about what makes some people thrive post challenge and other crumble. That curiosity lead to my studies of the mind, body, spirit connection – or what can be encompassed in the word soma. Growing my connection with myself and being able to understand my nervous system has allowed me to feel instead of think my way through difficult experiences and has enabled me to grow to the place I am today. I believe we go through difficult experiences so we can discover more about ourselves but also be able to help other people and I love helping other unlock their own self healing through the gift of somatic understanding that I have received.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
At the heart of generational healing is the ability to stay present and build better self awareness. Only then can we lead from our strengths and develop deeper and healthier human connection with others. Be Better was founded to tell stories and connect conscious consumers with products, coaching, and courses that help do just that. We believe that sustainable high performance is possible and our stories through Wendy’s ‘What I Meant to Say’ podcast, mindfulness courses like High Performance Zen, and Go With the Flow which helps women to understand how to optimize their lives when they have a better understanding of the female hormone cycle and fuel themselves and move more mindfully according to their monthly cycle. Be Better Life is a community dedicated to real human connection and sustainable high performance that can help anyone relinquish ‘Type A’ for good and find the joy in their ‘Type Be’.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Resilience and the importance of authenticity and human connection as the world continues to change are at the heart of what I believe in as an entrepreneur and healer. There are no silver bullets or short cuts to healing and creating the life you want to have, but the somatic awareness that I have developed through training and life experience allows me to help others unlock their own self healing abilities. This awareness also informs my path as and hone my vision as an entrepreneur who understands the need for generational healing so we can flourish and to connect with conscious consumers interested in healing and thriving rather than market to their pain points.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Overwhelm is something I know intimately and have learned how to move through as I have learned to transmute energy to create more calm and flow in my own life. One of the keys to solving the dreaded overwhelm feeling is to bring yourself back to the present moment and affirm your safety in that place. Connect with what your body is feeling in the overwhelm, take some deep breaths and feel yourself with your feet on the floor or tailbone where you are sitting. Once you have established this connection, you can begin to take action at the simplest thing in your mind, one thing at a time. As you learn to honor the feeling without judgment, the overwhelm will dissipate. As you start to accomplish, even the smallest task, the momentum builds to keep going and one thing at a time you can chip away at that life that once felt overwhelming. Habit stacking is a great antidote for overwhelm to put some of the simpler programming of your day on auto pilot too!
