Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jul Koehler. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jul , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from my passion, dreams, and goals. A knowing has always tugged inside me, telling me to keep going. And it’s still tugging. Also, the outside support of friends is very important, or family. What has helped me is finding a friend on the same path who becomes your accountability buddy. Then once a week you meet and talk about your achievements and the possible next steps you can take toward your career, dreams, and goals.
What else comes to mind is to rest when needed. Our society is a go-go-go-go society. But as artists, we need to recharge to create again. Take breaks, and allow yourself to sit in stillness to connect with your art. And then go.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m an actress, pro dancer, VO artist, filmmaker, screenwriter. You can see me in two Episodes of the Apple TV show The Last Days of Ptomely Grey. You can hear my voice in a few Video Games as well as in some German commercials.
As an actress, the world is opening up again. Auditions are coming in and it feels amazing to show and work on my craft. Besides telling stories as an actress I also develop, create, and write stories for Film and TV. I’m also writing a narrative podcast at the moment. That’s a first and comes with interesting challenges since I’m used to writing TV shows and films. I have three different writing partners. I love working as a team. It’s fun and I love the different strengths everyone brings to the table.
Currently, we have three TV shows ready, one film, and a podcast. I’m also writing a dance movie that I’m doing solo, which is a whole different experience. Not getting in my deadlines, so will probably need to get a writing partner on board.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. As an artist you should get creative training but also find someone who can teach you the business side of it and how to handle your money and invest into your career.
2. Get a mentor!!!
3. Trust the process of your journey and don’t be stuck on how it should go. Be open to any and every opportunity and see where it takes you.
4. Keep doing what you love. Your passion will open doors.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I would LOVE to meet female filmmakers, actors, screenwriters, and producers who are currently creating their opportunities, with scripts, podcasts, etc., like myself. And would love to have a weekly coffee or monthly get-together to share obstacles, successes, goals, dreams, and our stories. Let’s create a community of women who support each other with no competition, or one-sidedness.
