We recently connected with Emely Maria Viscarra and have shared our conversation below.
Emely Maria, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
My son Elijah Fa’apito U’u has given me my purpose. With Elijah being non speaking & diagnosed with Autism at the age of 3; it made me have a different perspective on everything in life and appreciate everything so much more. He’s my greatest life teacher and my business partner. The whole reason I even came about the vision for Sensor E. He’s an individual who isn’t really into your typical average toys. He’s a sensory seeker. His current favorite is slime. He’ll stim with slime throughout the day. Sensory play helps him with self regulation and makes him happy. So I started Sensor E to accommodate individuals with special needs interest or for the sensory seekers. My purpose is to accommodate, spread awareness, acceptance & inclusion.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Sensor E is not a non-profit (yet) due to personal reasons. In due time I’ll get to my end vision for Sensor E. For now I’m enjoying the process & journey. It’s been nice connecting with so many families locally, different cities, states & internationally. I’ve started with my creation of sensory play boxes; which is a hit & always requested as it’s more than just a play box for some; it’s a therapeutic & resourceful tool. Then I started to get invited to community events and I’ve been expanding since. Sensor E is unique & different because it’s something that doesn’t exist. I give service on the spot. I giveaway fidgets at every event appearance to help those who struggle in community public settings or who have anxiety and get overwhelmed. Since this is a cause I hold close to my heart; I make sure I consider many things when I execute to make sure we can accommodate all and make sure every individual can enjoy & have fun when they’re at Sensor E. I love witnessing the bond/friendships formed with every one; despite their differences & challenges through common interests in sensory play. I offer play that allows individuals the freedom to create, imagine and lead all while gaining beneficial skills. This work is impactful & significant. It’s an honor for me to help so many & bring joy and happiness to individuals and their families. I never want anyone to feel alone in this journey. If I can help or support in anyway I’m all for it because I know personally how it is & feels.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I have to say stepping out with Sensor E has tested me so much personally. I had to learn & accept a lot of things. Main thing is to realize that I can’t expect me from others. I had to accept a lot of things I actually wasn’t ok with because my focus is always on my purpose vs them. Patience, understanding & acceptance are skills Elijah has taught me and it’s also very helpful for me when I step out into communities. You have to be strong minded and have social emotional intelligence. I say as long as your focused on your purpose and don’t pay no attention to any distractions or negativity; than you’ll be good. This line of work keeps me driven & grounded.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
Finding a balance in everything. Taking a break from it all (parenting/work) to do self care for myself; since I pour so much out into the community. I also struggle with implementing boundaries and have a hard time saying “no”. I’m currently working on implementing this into my daily to protect my peace & sanity. I’m also trying to make more time in my busy schedule to do things I enjoy and make me happy. Even if it’s doing nothing and just catching up on we’ll needed rest. My personal journey takes a great toll on mental & emotional wellbeing so I’m looking into helpful coping mechanism. Music, reading, watching films/movies, painting, cooking, hanging out with family and friends are enjoyable and therapeutic for me. Isolation and self reflection/work is also very therapeutic to me. To check out from everything and everyone and just be in peace & silence. I just want a content & happy life.
