We recently connected with Aly G and have shared our conversation below.
Aly, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I keep my creativity alive by being open to whatever sparks of creativity and inspiration come my way. I feel like you never know when it is going to hit, but since I have been consistently creating since I was very young, I feel like I have a part of me that is always open to it. Sometimes even as I’m falling asleep, I get back up to record an idea for a song that is coming to me. I also think having a playful attitude helps keep my creativity alive. In ways, I feel like I get more goofy and playful the older I get. I especially like bringing that into my movement and dance practices. It is really fun to just play with movement when I’m dancing and not think about it “looking right,” but more about how it feels and being willing to experiment. Another fun way to keep the musical creativity alive is by going to music jams where no one knows what is going to happen, but everyone is there to have fun and see what arises. I think allowing for surprises at music and dance jams is a really fun way to continue being open creatively.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am an independent hip hop/pop musician and rapper. I started my musical career in the singer/songwriter world under my full name, Alyson Greenfield, and within the last year I launched this new ALY G project. I’m really excited about it! I have performed in NYC and LA primarily, and have created this project to give a fun and sometimes comedic spin on social issues that are important to me. The music focuses on topics like female empowerment, fertility, gentrification, self-confidence, and more. The first couple of tracks I released were “Build It Up” and “Super Power.” Both tracks were produced by Jon Blok who I originally met at a music jam in Brooklyn years back. We had an electric vibe together, and it was so fun to go into his studio and record these two tracks. The Hype Magazine premiered the “Super Power” Music Video that was Produced by Grammy Nominated Producer Baby Paul and shot by Chardon Whitehurst who is the Executive Producer of “The Punchline Academy” on Eminem’s Sirius XM Chanel Shade 45. I was really excited about the team for the video and was honored that The Hype said, “As she continues to captivate listeners with her unique blend of wit and wordplay, ALY G remains at the forefront of the hip-hop scene…With her latest single ‘Super Power’ serving as a rallying cry for empowerment, ALY G’s fearless approach to music promises to inspire and uplift audiences far and wide.” My latest single, “Can’t Break Me” is a collaboration with the artist Glafizya. I am also about to go into the studio with Baby Paul (Nas, J Dilla, Kanye West) to record a super fun half French/half English collaboration we are finishing! There are many more collaborations in the works! If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think the most important qualities are 1) a willingness to follow my passions 2) an open-minded attitude and 3) an ability to work hard on things that are important to me. Advice I would give folks early on in their journey is to tap into what moves and motivates you. A truth of what you are passionate about will shine through and people will notice it. Another thing I would say is to be open to meeting lots of people and go to a few networking events in your industry. You never know who you will meet!
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed there are many things I do. Sometimes I write a song because that helps me get my feelings out, but if I am not in a place where I can write a song, I usually try and do a breathing technique that can slow my heartrate down like alternate nostril breathing, call or text a friend who I feel will understand, play a song and dance around to it, do some yoga, or journal.
