Meet Travis Cherry

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Travis Cherry. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Travis, thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout

For me, I first learned to step back and enjoy life. I had to get out of the studio and go do other things not related to music. I go the golf course and hit some balls or go to a cool restaurant. The mental health side is important to me. Just taking time out to realize that music is going to be there and you can’t do it all in one day or even one week. Just letting go and realizing that everything is out of your control.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I have been a music producer for over 20 years. I’m originally from Raleigh, NC and I moved to Atlanta in 1996. It’s been a great journey. I currently own my own studio in Atlanta called The Purple Room. We have had a lot of great releases come from this place. Currently we have new music from Case, Lyr-x, Raheem Devaughn, and many more about to hit the charts. I produce music as well as engineer and mix. Honestly my focus is on helping people, being a positive example of what we are like coming from Raleigh, and I love volunteering my time to speak to kids in schools. That means a lot to me. I never expected this to be the career it turned into, and I’m focused on enjoying the experience.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The best advice I can give anyone trying to make it is to live life. Enjoy those moments. That’s what is going to give your music a great story. Don’t get so caught up in the music that you forget to live life and enjoy your family and friends. As far as skills, you need a great ear, patience, and if you want to engineer, learning and using math skills is important while mixing.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?

Things Fall Apart. I love that book. Reading how the main character didn’t want to change and had to go on a journey really put things in perspective for me. It taught me to be malleable and ready to adjust to life’s challenges instead of staying in one way of thinking.
