We recently connected with Lindsay Marty and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lindsay , thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Overcoming Imposter Syndrome has been a significant journey for me, especially during such a transformative period of my life. As a mother to three wonderful children, I’ve always been committed to demonstrating resilience and perseverance. Starting my business, Above the Bar Marketing, during the uncertain times of COVID-19 presented a unique set of challenges and learning curves. The simultaneous personal loss of my mother to cancer in my first year of entrepreneurship tested my strength and resolve like never before.
I tackled these feelings of doubt and inadequacy by focusing on the strengths and experiences that uniquely qualified me to lead and innovate in the legal marketing sector. Embracing a mindset of lifelong learning helped immensely; I continuously sought out new knowledge and skills relevant to my industry, which reinforced my confidence. Furthermore, by openly discussing my feelings of imposter syndrome with peers and mentors, I realized that many successful individuals shared similar experiences. This transparency helped normalize these feelings and highlighted that they are hurdles, not stop signs.
Most importantly, I’ve learned to celebrate small victories and set realistic expectations for myself and my business. Each small success built my confidence, reminding me that I am capable and competent. Balancing my roles as a business owner and a mother, while navigating personal loss, I’ve found that resilience is not just about enduring but about finding ways to thrive despite the odds. This journey has taught me that the only approval I truly need is my own.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
In reflecting on my journey, I believe resilience, strategic thinking, and empathetic leadership were the three most impactful qualities that guided my success.
Resilience was crucial, especially starting a business during the COVID-19 pandemic and dealing with the personal tragedy of my mother’s passing. It taught me to navigate setbacks and persist despite challenges.
Strategic thinking allowed me to identify unique opportunities within the legal marketing landscape and adapt my business model to meet the evolving needs of my clients effectively. This skill was instrumental in sustaining and growing my business amidst widespread uncertainty.
Lastly, empathetic leadership enabled me to build strong relationships with my team and clients. Understanding and addressing their needs, fears, and aspirations helped foster a supportive and collaborative environment, crucial for any service-oriented business.
2. What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?**
To develop resilience, I recommend embracing challenges as opportunities for growth. Don’t shy away from difficult situations; instead, see them as a chance to strengthen your problem-solving skills and emotional fortitude. Keeping a reflective journal can help you see how far you’ve come and what you’ve overcome, reinforcing your ability to handle future challenges.
For strategic thinking, always stay curious and informed. Keep up with industry trends, attend webinars, read relevant books, and engage with thought leaders. This continual learning will help you anticipate market shifts and think several steps ahead. Practicing scenario planning can also hone your strategic skills, enabling you to better navigate potential business challenges.
To enhance empathetic leadership, work on active listening and foster an open communication culture. Seek feedback and genuinely consider other perspectives. Leadership workshops or coaching can be very beneficial here. Remember, empathy builds trust and loyalty, significantly impacting team morale and client satisfaction.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Absolutely, collaboration is a cornerstone of growth and innovation in any business, especially in the dynamic field of legal marketing. I am particularly interested in partnering with individuals who bring fresh perspectives to digital marketing, content creation, and client engagement strategies within the legal sector. Whether you’re an expert in SEO, a social media strategist, or a legal professional with insights into client needs, I believe that your unique skills can contribute significantly to mutual growth.
I’m also keen on collaborating with tech innovators who are working on solutions that optimize client interactions or streamline marketing operations. The integration of technology is pivotal in staying ahead in today’s market, and I am excited about exploring new tools and methodologies.
